Hi,

I am going to plasterboard my bathroom walls using 12.mm board and dot and dab. I will also be using frame fixings through the dot and dab into the brick for extra strength as I'm going to tile the walls using porcelain tiles.

My question is, how long do I need to leave the dot and dab to dry before I start tiling? I read on another forum that it's 2 weeks - i hope not as I've only got a few days off work to get the bathroom done!!

I did think about using dry fix foam, but my walls are quite uneven red brick walls so I'm not convinced it'll do the job

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

Rob

Are the walls that bad that you couldn't put in some wooden battens and attach the plasterboard to that with screws... now waiting then but you need to use suitable fixings.

There's one wall I can't batten as the door frame on the adjacent wall is too close. I only have about 40mm for the dabs, plasterboard, adhesive and tiles so it's going to be a tight fit.

Cheers

Depending on how uneven the wall is and the thickness of your tiles I think your going to struggle to get within 40mm.

10mm tiles, 5mm grout, 12.5mm p.board = 12.5mm to play with.

What's the wall in question made of? Could the existing surface be removed to take it back to brickwork or stud?

It's a brick wall. The 40mm accounts for taking the wall back to brick. I thought the dabs would be between 5-10mm thick which would keep me inside the 40mm?

Hello Rob,

I'd say a minimum of 10mm for the dot and dab. However to get a nice level wall, you'll need to find the highest points on the wall and ensure you dot and dab around those (so they're in the void) to keep the depth down.

Personally I'm not 100% sure of the guidelines for various backgrounds but I think you can have 32kg per sq m inc grout, but of course this is dependent of a decent fix to the wall behind it. How big/heavy are the porcelain tiles you're using? You might want to consider aquapanel which is stronger. Good thread about dot and dabbing that stuff here //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=168578#axzz2BlXDnJTJ

I know you're pushed for time but have you considered rendering the wall and then tiling? Better to do the job right that rush it to meet a deadline IMO.
