Tablets

im not that clued up with technology so maybe ive used the wrong terms. i work for a guy who designs websites . having a chat and told him my computer, dell inspiron 530, appears to be slow. as an example i said my son who has the same computer,is much quicker, pages turn over instantly like mine used to when i first used it, in summer 2008.
he said have a chat with this guy, hell come to your home and service it. so i did and very pleased about it. im not talking about deleting a few unused programmes. i think i got a proper clean up, good advice and am pleased about it. the chap cleared up an email problem i had, linked my emails/gmails to my iphone. during our chat he outlined the basic capability of the machine compared to modern equioment and i thought he said my memory was 2 gb. i think from your replies ive got this wrong.
i have word office 2003 on here and i cant seem to take/turn my bookmarks into pdf to load onto the iphone or in the future nexus. he also said that the operating system ,starts with a v?, is one of the worst that windows has put out

Personally I wouldn't buy any cheap tablet. The cost of a Galaxy Tab, or a Nexus 7, or the like, is justified by the components. Hell, the Nexus 7 doesn't make much of a profit on the hardware at all (if any when on sale).

i thought he said my memory was 2 gb. i think from your replies ive got this wrong.

You got it half wrong. RAM (memory) is not the same as storage. 2GB is enough for what you do. The Inspiron 530 is a perfectly adequate machine (spec varies, but even the basic model isn't too bad), should be quite fast enough if properly cleaned up.

he also said that the operating system ,starts with a v?, is one of the worst that windows has put out

Vista. Two steps forward, four steps back. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been.

Professional curiosity: What did he charge?

£40 was the quote over the phone, he drove from 4 oaks to my place in lichfield, about11-12 miles. he was here at least hour and a half, maybe longer with me asking questions as he carried out the clean up.he kept the bill at £40 but i felt that £50 was fairer and thats what i paid

Keep his number. All too many charge far too much.

not sure there are any tablets at any price i'd consider buying. what do you want it for?

Instead of two or three seperate gadgets I have my music and books on my tablet,my garmin packed up and I have found a free app to use as a gps.As you say it depends on what you want from it.

but they're all incredibly poor at all of those functions. take photos buy a camera. listen to music... for got sake buy something decent... and a tablet is not one of those things, they are rubbish.

they are handy if you are travelling, you can have all your stuff in one handy 7 inch gadget....ive got my books, music, games...internet (if wifi available) etc, mines got 32gb and yes...as much as Eddiem says he wouldnt buy one.....he uses mine for playing angry birds on!
Android 4 ICS (stands for ice cream sandwich) isnt the latest version SS)

home computer has 2gb and it contains everything and some so the 8gb is plenty.

Your home computer will have 2gb RAM (active memory), but 250gb hard drive space (dell inspiration 530).

Most tablets have about 512mb to 4gb RAM, assume the lower figure for cheap models.

8gb storage is pathetic, but good enough for keeping documents on it (movies will rapidly fill up the space).

i looked at it online thought ill have 16 gb version £199 instead of 8gb one at £159.

I don't know why these tablets charge so much for an extra 8gb, 32gb flash drives cost about a tenner.

Get a tablet with USB support, then you can just buy USB flash drives for extra storage.

You can get a 64gb flash drive for £20.

windows vista. not regarded as a particularly good offering, but not that bad IMHO. Could be worse, you could have windows 8...... now that is truly awful.

What do you want to use it for?

Netbooks are basic laptops, that ones got 320gb storage (the tablet has 8gb), usb connectors, monitor connector (means you can connect it up to your flat-screen TV, a keyboard for hitting when you hate your work.

It has windows operating system giving you a wide range of programmes you can install.

Tablets are for lugging about documents, making use of apps, maybe movies, but not for serious work, tablets assume you have a proper computer for that.

Fits in your pocket.

I don't see anything particular wrong with either choice, though you get what you pay for.

Thanks, AS. As I said, he wants an ipad, but there's no chance.

If he had a netbook instead, might it serve him better in later years?

Is the Argos one decent for the money?

Does he have access to a computer now? A netbook is more flexible, but they don't tend to be high spec (it's basically a low spec laptop) and so I doubt it will serve for more than basic word pocessing and browsing in the near future, things become obsolete pretty quick.

You can usually buy better kit online or direct from a manafacturer for the same money, rather than Argos. Though it does help to be able to take it back to the shop if there is a problem.

Cheers

Thanks for your help.

He does have access to a shared PC at the mo.

Have not yet found anything better for £180, but not stopped looking yet.

It all goes back to the question of what he want's an i-pad or similar for,Diane touched on its ideal as a travel companion in addition to what I said about having music and books on it there are lots of free games to play on them as well.I notice in another thread about apps for his new smart phone,I'm sure there are lots of games to download for smart phones as well.
