I'd probably describe myself as a serious DIYer anything from building stud partitions, tiling etc in the middle of building a log store at the moment from posts and rails with slate roof. I use screws for all manner of things obviously and have run huge stocks I have gatherd over the years very low. I havent bought screws for a long long time and have just looked on screwfix and have a sore head! You almost need an engineering degree to suss it all out. I am looking for screws from 2" to 5" for all manner of jobs inside and out. There are turbo gold, silver, twin threads single threads etc is there such a thing as a general purpose screw these days?

I realise for specialist jobs there are specific screws, for external fencing, putting down chipboard flooring, slotted brass for decorative wood fixing etc but what would you suggest for a good general purpose screw for use in several lengths for internal and garage, sheds etc?

Thanks

silver are imperial gold are metric

my suggestion is no6x1 8x1 1/4 8x1 1/2 8x1 3/4 10x 1 3/4 8x2 10x2 then half inch up to 3 1/2 then no12x4 upwards as 12s

or gold 3.5x25 4x30 4x35 4x40 4x45 5x50 5x60 5x70 5x80 then 6x100mm

Don't believe all the marketing hype

Silver twin-thread or Screwfix's turbo-gold will do for all timber work, and in other cases its a job for a specialist screw

I think the Gold screws are a bit crap - don't bite as well and don't screw in as well as the Turbo-Gold

I use gold all the time - brilliant screw. (ooer missus).

Stainless twins threads for me. In fact stainless for almost everything, well everything I do, which is very little these days to be fair.

I use stainless for outside work, but if I did a lot, the cost would mount up.

luckily the price seems to have been falling, but unluckily they seem to have got softer.

I can understand the point, but I feel the screws generally form only a small part of the projects cost with the bonus that they are effectively fit and forget.

I find stainless screws snap a lot more than normal silver screws, and only use them when I have to.

That's because they're softer. Half way to the horror that is brass.

but stainless knives, and bolts used on motorbikes, are generally hard and sturdy.
