is there a point where humans can know too much? Once we understand the laws of the universe, and start to try and break them? Once we understand the escence of life? maybe we can give innanimate objects this 'escence of life'... where will it all go from there?

I feel this race is not many generations away from this !!

Hell of a lot further than you think, trust me. We'll probably kill ourselves off via rather cruder methods long before we actually understand anything.

I beg to differ (although you and i will never know the outcome), but the acceleration of scientific development (aided by computer tech) is more than most of us can cope with !!

Just look at prgress over the last 2000 years versus that in the last 200 years !! and with pentium quad core, nearly human processors !! ....

We've lived on the cusp of great things !!!

That, apparently, is your problem.

Yes, nearly human. Of course.

We've lived on the cusp of great things !!!

Unfortunately, life is not science fiction.

Wow, didn't expect to be "put right" quite so abruptly over such an objective subject Monkeh... was hoping for a bit of exploration of the possibilities, rather than feeling that i'd made a mistake in my calculations, and needed to be told in a forthright manner !!!

Once we understand the laws of the universe, and start to try and break them?

If they are fundamental laws we wouldn't be able to break them.

I suspect that the "laws" we call them are a subset of a higher order of descriptive formulae.

It's quite unbelievable that a few primitive blokes in odd wigs, working with quills and ink actually worked out the 'actual' laws of the universe, or indeed all the other universes !!

While I do not believe that I.Q. is an absolute measure of cognitive ability, I am very open to the possibility that we all have a practical limit to our "intelligence".
I remember very little of my junior school days. I do however remember being able to do long division and multiplication, with pencil and paper. Contrast that with the lad who, struggle as he did, just could not do simple sums like 4 x 3. I am pretty sure he could have spent until hell froze over, and he still wouldn't "get it". Both frustrating, and painful, to watch. I really and truly felt for him.
By the same token, I am sure there is plenty of stuff out there that I could never comprehend, even if I had until the end of time. Stuff that others "get", without batting an eyelid.
I am pretty certain that there is a whole universe out there that is beyond the absolute limit of human comprehension. Unless some aliens come down and get us over that plateau.

If artificial intelligence ever becomes reality then maybe the possibilities are endless. Besides, if we can't comprehend certain things given time for new insights to emerge, why would you think "aliens" would be able to?

Because aliens.
