The end of camp

There's loads available on the second-hand market.
But if it's the "stirring custard when changing gear" experience that you're after, there's bound to be a few other alternatives.

Friend of mine brought one a few years ago, brand new , made in Brazil . He liked it as a camper but didn't keep it long as he said the driving experience was frightening , powerless 1400 cc engine, awful steering and brakes that were only one step up from holding your hat out of the window.

Always love how folk get nostalgic about old automotive junk. They're invariably rubbish.

A friend of ours has an old Austin 7. He's a consultant surgeon, so it's not as if he can't afford anything better! He was telling us that it has a handbrake that works on the front wheels and a footbrake that works only on the back wheels and, if I remember correctly, a crash gearbox.

I can imagine that it's a lot of 'fun' to drive!

Philistine!

Nope the truth!! Annoying facts such as a pre 70's "sports" car will be out accelerated out braked out performed and out classed in every way by an astra 1.9 TD. Old cars... just that.... old fit for recycling only.

It's all about aesthetics, my boy.

Accelerating and handling is all very well, but where exactly on Britain's crowded roads can you use them? Performance is only part of the package, when choosing a car. Would you want something that went 0-60 in 2 secs and cornered like it was on rails, if it looked like a skip?

You stick to your Vauxhall Ashtray. Give me an E-Type any day.

Lol I drive a Jag (not an e type) The astra comparision was just to show a very mundane modern car will beat nine shades out of an old clapped out crusher dodger. :D

Perhaps not a complete phillistine after all.

Can't deny the improvement in performance that has taken place over the decades. However, the classic car owner is looking for a different experience. As for clapped out, I think that the majority of classic cars are better maintained than modern cars.

I know what you mean I really do, just playing devils advocate. Just for me functionality and reliability trumps form.

I just detest that phrase "they dont build them like they used to" damn right it's called progress! !
