Quick question about thermal stores

Just a quick question about thermal stores, hopefully while Drivel isn't about.

Have they improved or are they still as awful as they were?

Reason I ask, is that I would like mains pressure hot water one day, but would like to DIY it, and I don't have a G3 ticket. Also I would like to avoid the yearly service cost. I've lived in a few places with combi's and didn't like them. Thanks.

Get/Make one with an external plate and they're fine if sized carefully.

Avoid over-sizing unless using renewables or solid fuel.

Dead giveaway is every thread Drivel gets involved in seems to get locked...... He even managed to upset the sparks and get several threads locked in that section.
