Solution needed

i am fitting an end cap to a worktop but there is a slight complication, the worktop runs slightly long than the wall it butts onto, see below -



should i cut it down, leaving a lip, and bend the lip round the back of the worktop edge?

also, is it best to hacksaw it down to size?

The worktop needs cutting back as close as is safe and then apply the end cap, or you risk catching your hip/leg on the corner [and it will look pants.]The edging strip supplied with the top would look neater and allow a closer finish.

trouble is i can't get my handheld circular saw all the way along the cut because the wall gets in the way - would it make a crap cut if i finished it with a hand saw?

i can't, i remodelled that area of the kitchen and the worktop has remained in situ. taking it off would mean taking the sink out and countless other tasks.

Yes, it will look hideous. The cut will be uneven, the laminate will chip, it will be a dogs dinner.

The proper method is to remove the worktop (or at least slide it away from the wall and unit below), then trim the end to the proper length using a router, and fit a suitable edging strip to the end.

Anything else will be a horrible bodge and look like it.

this is where you need a cack handed chippy,cut it down using a hand saw.
then cheat a little with some filler and build the wall out a tad to lose the thickness of the laminate end cap.

You could take the end down with a power plane which will leave a good edge and a belt sander would allow you to get very close to the edge of the unit.

Thanks for the idea! I'm not trying to have it fit for a king, just a reasonable finish will suffice. Hopefull your solution will give this 😊

Exactly this! An electric planer will do the trick. PLANE FRONT TO BACK!! Otherwise you will rip the laminate at the front.

Set the machine to maximum depth until you are practically done, then go down to a very small bit to take off any minor chips. Then you can glue on the edging strip that came with the worktop, using evostick, a layer on the strip and one on the worktop.

And cover EVERYTHING with plastic sheeting (poundland do it for - yes a pound) as it will get covered in sawdust.
