The worktop needs cutting back as close as is safe and then apply the end cap, or you risk catching your hip/leg on the corner [and it will look pants.]The edging strip supplied with the top would look neater and allow a closer finish.

Yes, it will look hideous. The cut will be uneven, the laminate will chip, it will be a dogs dinner.trouble is i can't get my handheld circular saw all the way along the cut because the wall gets in the way - would it make a crap cut if i finished it with a hand saw?
You could take the end down with a power plane which will leave a good edge and a belt sander would allow you to get very close to the edge of the unit.
