Hello,
I would like to know if you can reduce the depth of a kitchen unit without too many problems? I want a breakfast bar on a return part of the kitchen. I have 800 mm of space otherwise it will sit proud of the bi fold doors. I would like the unit to be 500mm deep with an overhang of 300mm. The back of the unit will be on show so it will have to look smart. Any ideas? The kitchen planner said use wall units but I see that as wasting space as I could have deeper units than 300. Thanks

how are you supporting the 300mm overhang ??

wall units will be best as it requires the right tools to give a good cut

On a 500mm unit I was not going to support it? If I felt it was required I would use supports either side.

assuming you have legs under the units they will pretty much be at the pivot point at around
350mm
so unless the cupboard contain concrete block they will tip when you lean on the top

You can just cut the side panels down to whatever depth you like, and then either rout a recess for the back panel, or fix some plant on strips and cut the back panel to the internal dimensions.

i sort off got the impression it was an island probably wrongly :D
if it is on a wall the storage underneath will have to be in a cupboard form as a drawer would be almost fully covered by the overhang

Thanks woody, the only problem is there won't be a wall to fix it to as it's on a return so one side will be part of the kitchen the other will be a breakfast bar area.

Yes big all, in a way it will be an island but still linked to the kitchen. (U shaped )
