If the water level in the larger domestic storage cistern is higher than the smaller feed and expansion cistern and there is a leak within the cylinder indirect coil water will find its own level and the smaller cistern will overflow.

If it was originally an electric heated cylinder then there would not normally have been a heating coil in the cylinder.
But they were convertible with a heating coil which screwed into the immersion heater thread. They were called something like a Micraversion.
They might still be available! Whilst most would always say a new cylinder is required then replacing a Micraversion would be a cheaper option to continue the past bodges on your system.

But at over £200 it will be cheaper to buy a new indirect cylinder!
Many have failed to find them in the last 10 years but that's because its being marketed as a solar thermal system component!
So sounds like a new cylinder time! My budget price for an over the phone quotation for a replacement cylinder is about £460. But that assumes not too much new pipework will be involved and that may not be the case for you. But you may live in a cheaper area where prices are somewhat lower.

No it is not!
Gravity HW in plumber's language means where the heating coil relies on gravity circulation from the boiler without a pump.
That only works with very old boilers having a cast iron heat exchanger.
Yours is a pumped system!
The question is whether its a converted direct cylinder or an indirect cylinder with its leaking heating coil.

Tony, you are, of course, correct again. The system is fully pumped, I'm new to this and getting details incorrect which doesn't help those trying to provide assistance.
today i have drained the FE tank (via a hose pipe - NOT via the heating system!) and removed lots of sludge and other rubbish from the FE tank. HW is still brown and my plumber pal is coming to look at it on Monday. Meanwhile if the two circuits are mixing as seems to be the case i suppose that there is now DS40 in my HW as well as sludge?

As stated above if the coil in the cylinder was faulty water would go from HW to the CH system not the other way round due to the HW cold feed tank being higher.
TCC, why should that be an issue. Have used DS40 many times when needed to without a problem. The chemical is so good that it clears thoroughly, even sediment that previously acted as leak sealer. Often heat exchangers start leaking not because DS40 is the cause, more a case of sediment that stopped the leak is no more. Same with rad valves.
When you drain the central heating system, header tank should empty
When you drain the HW cylinder, plastic tank ONLY would drain
Primatic tank feeds cylinder. Internal grubbins within cylinder feeds central heating system. You would have just on cistern.
Is that what this is?

Yes, I haven't seen one of those in ages!
I fitted one in the 1970's. That one has been fitted with an Essex Flange leaving an immersion heater in the original boss . New tank time
