Opinions Ladies and gentlemen.

What's the consensus of opinions ?

A migrant is someone who moves from one area to another, usually to improve or enrich their lives or those of their family.
An immigrant is one who permanently settles in another country.
An asylum seeker is someone who flees their own country to avoid persecution for whatever reason.
But these definitions are easily available.
Why do you ask here?

A concensus of opinions is the term used when most people agree. Others have given excellent definitions of the term migrant.

Next. I do hope it will be more interesting than this one.

I agree with Himaginn, especially his last point.

Have we reached consensus?

Depends what you mean by consensus? If the word means you agree with most on here,, and allow free discussion of current affairs (without interference or locking/deletion of threads) then yes, we've reached a consensus.. I don't believe for one minute that will happen though. ( I do wonder if you work for the BBC,,, well known for their totally impartial reporting,,, not)

migrate means to leave to go to another place
immigrant means you have arrive at the other end
replace the word migrate for departing and immigate for arriving

Not quite right:

Emigrate means to leave to go to another place
Immigrate means you have arrived at the other end.
Replace the word emigrate for departing and immigrate for arriving.

A migrant is someone doing it; emigrant and immigrant; you can't do one without the other.

Also, refugees are migrants escaping general danger.
Asylum seekers are migrants and refugees escaping specific personal danger and/or persecution.

The terms being misused by the media is the usual process of contradiction and confusion to dissuade discussion and/or objection.

Emigrate means to leave to go to another place
Immigrate means you have arrived at the other end.
People often seem to confuse these two terms, perhaps because one leads to the other so they are so closely associated.

I am an emigrant from the U.K, and an immigrant to the U.S. Or to put it another way, I emigrated from the U.K. and immigrated to the U.S.

Well since both Mrs Grouch and I am pretty fluent in Russian and Ukrainian, we shall watch the news with great concern from over there... We shall frown at the thought of your wives and daughters being made sex slaves and those who cannot recite the koran getting the chop... Naturally you apologists will be last as you are useful to them but eventually they will have no use for you.... Uncontrolled immigration, I'm all for it..

"German police say a man who was shot dead as he attacked a police station in Paris on Thursday had been living in a shelter for asylum seekers in Germany."

Migrants mostly move to places where there is work for them and stay there only as long as there is work for them. When the work ends they move on to somewhere else where they can fnd work. Migrant Workers can be very hard working people.

Here we go again. Some bits of information are reproduced to generate the required emotions.
Why not include all the relevant information, Joe? Such as:
It is not clear if he was among the many migrants who arrived in Germany in 2015. He was reportedly arrested over a robbery in France in 2013.
He was shot dead on the anniversary of the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attacks.
The suspect was carrying a meat cleaver and wearing a dummy suicide vest.
A piece of paper found on his body "pledged allegiance" to so-called Islamic State (IS) and vowed revenge for French "attacks in Syria".
German police said he had drawn an IS symbol on the wall of a room in the shelter.
The man's exact origins are unclear. According to the German Welt am Sonntag newspaper, he has in various encounters with the French and German authorities claimed to be Moroccan, Tunisian, Syrian and Georgian................

Some analysts have suggested that IS has encouraged a link between refugees and terrorism in order to foster hostility to refugees in Europe

Anti-immigration campaigners have seized on the Cologne incident as an example of what they see as the failure of the country's asylum policy. The prominence of the far-right Pegida movement was fading. It is now using the attacks as a propaganda tool.

I guess this puts you firmly in an anti-immigration camp, Joe?

This new year resolution lark hasn't lasted long has it.
Looks like we're going downhill faster than a falcon in a stoop.
