Many spellings and usages which a lot of Brits are quick to criticize as being "Americanisms" actually originated in Britain, were exported to the new world but later fell out of use in Britain itself.

But how many of those are hard-wired to the device? I don't think I've ever seen a single one, so a small hole for the output connector to pass through will be adequate, about 1/4 to 3/8 in. in many cases.

its more to do with several wires through the same hole people think "a plug" sized hole
then you add 2 scarts 2 plugs a phono and an aeriel

i actually have a coloured tv thats so old it doesn't have a scart socket

I smile when I see from the French. Most of Europe has some Greek or Roman words in their language and to work out if a word came from Latin or French is rather hard.

There is some debate about the origin of the placename. Mold either originates from the Norman-French "mont-hault" (high hill) or from Robert de Montalt and is recorded as Mohald in a document of 1254. The Welsh language placename of Yr Wyddgrug is recorded as Gythe Gruc in a document of 1280–1, and comes from the words "Yr" (the), "gwydd" (tomb, sepulchre) and "crug" (mound).

I at one time lived on the Falklands and being only around 200 years since the British settled we still know why places got their names.
Elephant Cannon was named due to the number of discarded cans which once contained Elephant beer.
Budgie's Bridge was named after the crane driver who placed it because he was always whistling.
Connors Wharf again after the crane driver.
Most are named after people, but working out name due to beer cans would take some doing.
In Wales it seems common to name places after pigs. Not a clue why, but if you translate the Welsh name to English we would get names the residents would not like. So the English name is often nothing like the Welsh one.

At college and work we have large holes with covers hinged so you can open get plug through then close.

Fair point, and it's always better to make provision at the beginning than have to come back and try and make additional holes later.

Horrible system. When it was conceived the idea of making things simple for the average user connecting a VCR to a TV was sound enough, but the whole system was poorly implemented. I'm glad it was never adopted over here.
