I've been travelling for the last few weeks, and on opening the post tonight for the last few weeks, I found a Dart Charge PCN for 30th August. I'm not challenging it, but what a rip-off!

Having close family just south of the river, I've used the Dartford crossing many times in the past, I just thought it strange that the toll booths had disappeared since the last time I made the crossing. I assumed it had become free for whatever reason. But to find that I now have to pay £72.50 for one crossing is galling!
As it was my first time for using and not paying I would have been allowed 21 days to pay the charge, but as I was away, I wasn't even aware of the charge!

The most galling bit was the traffic, admittedly it was the Bank Holiday weekend, but on the Tuesday afternoon it took us about an hour just to join the traffic to go through the tunnel!

I certainly won't be using the Dartford Crossing in future, especially as the alternatives are easily as convenient, and now I realise, a lot cheaper.
Anyone else fallen foul of this and what was the outcome?

I very rarely use the M6 toll 'cos I think the charges are far too high as well. But at least there are toll booths so you don't get suckered into paying a ridiculous amount.
Although I regularly use the payeage roads on the continent 'cos I think they're worth the outlay, and there's not usually an acceptable alternative.
I think one can drive something like 100 km for about 10 euros in France on the payeage. That compares to about 20 km for about £5 on the M6 toll.

A friend in a similar situation did appeal the charge on the grounds that the signage explaining the new method of payment were inadequate for a first time user. The appeal was granted.

Alternatives ? Go round the Heathrow side ? The Blackwall Tunnel ? They could argue that in the time you were queueing you had ample time to read the signs!

Thanks Dave. I did say we were queuing to join the traffic on the M25/A282. Once on, we were moving much quicker and freer. We joined from the A206. Once on, there's no opportunity get off! There's about 500 metres in dense, fast moving traffic and then you're in the tunnel!

But you've managed to identified the other obvious alternatives. Well done!
In fact, as the M1 is limited to 50mph more or less after the M6 junction, and the M40 isn't, the anti-clockwise M25 makes a lot of sense.

I'm sure it's run by a company like Parking Eye so it's a case of who bottles out first. You can open an account and put about £5 in it and get a reduced rate. Not sure if I've still got any credit in mine.

You can't be visiting family that often - it's 2 years since the removal of the toll booths! Surely the cost of the crossing charge (£2.50) is less than the fuel cost a going 3/4 the way round the M25?

Am slightly amused at your naivety, or wishful thinking. I don't think I've ever known something like that to become free!

Abolition of Bridge Tolls (Scotland) Act 2008
it removed the remaining tolls on the Forth Road Bridge and the Tay Road Bridge and repealed legislation relating to the Erskine Bridge.

From the M40, it's pretty much equidistant. As I've said, take into consideration the road works on the M1....
Sometimes I go M40, sometimes M1.
Once around Birmingham area, it's just which way you fancy.

But London is 'slightly' busier than the Isle of Skye.... and the bridge isn't in Scotland. Scotland spend their money in quite nice ways, like free meds etc but London is all about making money. I would've checked it myself personally as I don't believe that our councils etc do things out of the goodness of their hearts!
Oh well, it's an expensive mistake for you, bet you don't do it again :)

And it's never been free as far as I know.

Went to Croydon yesterday and before setting off paid for 2 journeys through the Dartford Tunnel. Total cost for a return journey £5.

We knew the easiest route would be round the M25 so when the satnav tried to steer us away from it on the outbound journey we ignored it until it realised which way we wanted to go and then gave us the right directions.

Six hours later we set off to return home and punched our home postcode in expecting it to give us the same return route with slight variations due to one way systems.
NO! It took us through London via a circuitous route including places like Lewisham, Poplar, the South Circular etc until we were in the feeder roads for the Blackwall tunnel. This tunnel is free, the distance home was 10 miles shorter but the time was 2 1/4 hours longer because of the volume of traffic going the same way. The signage on the feeder roads simply says, 'Tunnel' until you are about 2 miles away when it then indicates the Blackwall Tunnel. By then it was impossible to change route as there was only one way off just before the tunnel and we had no chance at all of crossing lanes without great danger of causing an accident. In future my trusty road map will be in my car at all times.
