Hi everyone, I am currently paying a roofer to do my house roof(new tiles+insulation). Just recently he put a dry ridge kit on the middle but when I got on the loft yesterday I saw some nails that pricked through the top and under the new felt.
I feel that these may leak in future and cause problems. The roofer said it is fine and won't leak. Any advice will be appreciated.

Is that leaking now on the rafters?

Careless with the nail, but normally OK as the ridge covers it

That Leak is due to condensation, he is putting some vents there so hopefully that solves this issue

Really? That does not look like condensation damp soaking into timber like that.

Anyway, he should have (still could?) split the membrane below the dry ridge to vent the roof.

Vent tiles wont do much good as a roof needs to be vented from ridge to eaves. If vents are just placed down the roof somewhere, warmer air can still linger up by the apex of the roof as the air does not get to circulate.

This is what it looks like at the moment. I hope the roofer does exactly what you are saying. He will be back on Friday.

the puncture is careless but not end of the world i guess.
you need to insulate properly currently its poor.
and ventilate above the insulation area.
do you have any roof pictures from out side?
the tiles do the weathering.

when proper vents gets installed I think then the roofer will insulate that area. Will take some pictures from outside of the roof tomorrow.

Do you think there can be some sort of breathe able membrane that can be put on top of the current insulation to make the insulation a bit better??

you have a breathable membrane under the tiles. another over insulation will not help.
maybe get the insulation upgraded... then snag the job when finished.

What you could do, is get some of that old insulation scrunch it up to about a fist size, and wedge it between the laps of the membrane between the rafters to open it up about 25mm or so. This will allow greater ventilation to the loft, and also allow any condensation to run out on top of the membrane and not drip off the underside in to the loft.

But increasing that insulation on the ceiling to 300mm depth will help to reduce warm air in the loft and the condensation risk that comes with it.

Should there be something in between those ridge tiles to make it look smoother. Also two tiles looks a bit different colour than the rest. the roofer seems to be in a rush to do everything ASAP. I paid almost 3/4 of the amount and trusted him as he lives local but now it seems like he has taken advantage of that.

What can I do if things don't get done as it should be.

The ridge look like they are just laid in place ready to be bedded or dry fixed. so not finished.
The different coloured ridge and tiles are reclaimed not "New"
Same for the verges which are waiting for their cut tiles to be bedded in place
Confused about one picture where it joins into the neighbors, is there a step there? if so lead flashings required.
The job is small and no real reason to take draws I reckon.
Try a few more pictures from other angles closer up ?
Keep hand on your money now I say

Dry Ridge kit was already put underneath those tiles at the top.hence I am not sure whether he is going to leave it as it is or what!!
Reclaimed tiles?? I paid him extra to get all new tiles.

My neighbours side does join a little onto mines as you can see. I don't really know much about lead flashing but I will see what he does. Also there is no ladder to go close up but I will try to get up there when roofer is here to take some better pics.

Lastly you are right I am going to hold onto the remaining balance until work is done with a certificate

Looks nothing major to worry about to me just going by the pictures. The reclaimed ridges look like their just on to cover it for now. Maybe just needing to get more new ridges...or more cover on the slightly bigger ridges till he gets the new ones fitted. Fine line between getting a good job and looking for perfection. Obviously people are paying good money but a nail through the felt isn,t the end of the world. He's just needing to come back to finish off the left hand side the right hand side and the ridges. Really don't think the guys taking advantage of you as long as he finishes it to an acceptable standard and the tolerances are adhered to etc.

Some of the guys on here look really accomplished roofers. More likely to be slightly more critical of the work. But again it doesn' look like the guy who,s doing your works a cowboy or taking advantage of you. What he's done so far looks satisfactory to me. Guys on here would probably do a better job...but as I said a lot of them look pretty accomplished in their trade...better than your average tradesman. As long as he finishes it to a satisfactory standard pay the man his money. Any problem there looks like down to not being completed yet or minor...more than he's taking advantage of you.

Your condensation problem, it should not be anywhere near that bad regardless of ventilation up there as the membrane should release any small amount, you need to stop any steamy air getting through into the loft. Check the ceiling especially in the bathroom and airing cupboard and around the loft hatch for any pipe and cable holes. Even astound the bathroom fan grille. Is the duct for the bathroom fan venting into the loft at all?
