USB Power

I have a speaker that is powered by USB and I have a ceiling mounting bracket for it. So wondering what the best way to power it is? I have power source from the lighting circuit which I can run off. However, I do not want to install a plug or even those plugs with USB on the ceiling as that would look rather silly. Is there any kind of transformer that you can get where you can have mains going in and a USB on the other-end which can then be put into some sort of junction box inside the ceiling?

most uk houses have the upstairs socket wiring inside the ground floor ceiling/upstairs floor.
So why take power off the lights?
It would be easier to take power off the upstairs sockets and deliver usb power to a plate in the ceiling.
My floors are solid downstairs so even my downstairs power is delivered through thew ceiling/upstairs floor.
You have to lift the upstairs floor anyway.

Yes, they are often called phone chargers. You probably already have one or more.

Indeed ... except that they are nearly all 'wallwarts', whereas the OP presumably wants one which can be hard wired.

There are ones that are several outputs with a mains lead as opposed to a wall wart but I would be wary of installing one in an inaccessible place

The grid switch does allow single module USB chargers

not sure if you can get single module plates however.

I don't think that the OP really wants a plate (grid or otherwise) on his ceiling. However, I'm not sure that he is going to have any choice, because he could not really have any power supply which was 'inaccessible' above his ceiling - so a blank plate (covering an access hole) is perhaps the best he could hope for.

It would also depend on power requirements. I know with a 3.1 amp per pair double 13A socket with USB it will supply my wife's IPad with 1.5 amp, but from a computer it seems around 0.4 amp is the maximum. Most powered USB hubs will supply 0.5 amp you can buy these

massive 40W output, but not sure if I would want to hide it in the ceiling or wall, and if put in a box then why not use a grid system?

That's basically what I found as well.
But if there is a bedroom/airing cupboard above and near, you could use this above the floor and run a long usb extension lead to the site.
or hide the PSU behind furniture

Indeed there are, and I would also be wary. However, (as per my quote) I was really thinking of the ones that winston said the OP probably already had, when he wrote ....

Reading the OP again, why not just use a standard speaker and run speaker wire?

I presume that, since it is "USB powered", it's actually more than just a 'standard speaker'.
