Amnesty for illegal immigrants?

The more relevant question is that if this is the will of the people - remove illegal immigrants then why haven't successive Governments listened to the public?

If the government has allowed overstayers to remain here without being pursued for many years, then those people have settled. In which case, I don't think it is fair to start deporting them now.

I don't how difficult it is to catch overstayers. It isnt like such people can be stopped with border checks, these are people that have entered legally, students for example.

The Windrush generation are different, they are people from commonwealth countries invited here and are being threatened with deportation due to flaws in the system.

The problem I have with over stayers is they specifically broke their Visa agreement. The lack of entry and exit checks is still to this day a damning indictment of successive governments.

If their is no penalty for overstaying then the VISA is worthless. I would give VISA over stayers time to leave in an orderly fashion unless they can make a case that them leaving will create more harm to the UK. For example they are working on some research that very few people are experienced in.

How can the home office distinguish between an illegal immigrant and a commonwealth immigrant with no paperwork.

I imagine there is going to be sharp rise in cases of claims of legal immigrants from commonwealth nations.

Yeah, amnesty, put them up in hotels and pay them £ 000's. We'll call in being Grenfelled.

Simple, declare an amnesty and then when they show up arrest them and thrown them in a cramped cell where they are given no food or water until deportation. If the host country doesn't want them back, shoot them or put them in a forced labour camp.

Anyone ilegal should be given 3 years to hand them selfs in and each case will be dealt with to determine if they should be allowed to stay or not

Those allowed to stay could be made to pay extra tax to make up for what they have not paid. Those found guilty of committing crimes will not be allowed to stay.

In the mean time bring out a scheme for ID cards nationally.

Those then found after this will be deported.

We don't need an ID card scheme. It will be a single point of failure and guaranteed to be compromised.

We need a sensible approach not one for the baying masses lead by the DM brigade.

I would say something along the lines of what Bodd mentioned. I would give illegal immigrants 3 years to come forward and have their cases heard on a merit basis. After 3 years they lose the right for their case to be heard and it's on yer bike.

Those who have integrated and settled and are contributing you can assess them and offer them a route to citizenship say after 10 years providing they remain on good behaviour.

Only fools will think round them up and ship them off.

This won't be cheap. But I'm tired of idiotic government thinking they can do this on the cheap or contract this out. It's a long term problem that can be solved.

We want people with skills still to see the UK as a great destination.
