Taking asbestos guttering to the skip?.

Just had a read tonight on taking asbestos (gutters in my case) to the skip.

Apparently you can't just turn up, you have to book an apointment. Can't transport it inside a vehicle (makes sense to be fair!).

Has to be wetted previous to bagging and still wet inside the bag when delivered??.

There is a charge which is fair enough.

Anybody have experience of actually taking it in?. Was it wet still?.

Sounds like they'd rather you dump it than take it in..

Getting you to wet it down is to minimise dust exposure and also to charge you the water weight. My mate did this and they charged him the full weight of the bags as it counts as contaminated waste. Hundreds it cost him. He lost on the job due to the cost of disposal. Try and get a kilo price before taking it down there ad hoc, as some municipal gangster is likely to take the **** and overcharge you if you let them.

If you can't transport it inside a vehicle how are you supposed to get it there ? Carrier pigeon ?

If you are near a county line it might be worth checking other counties policies.

Our nearest dump doesn't accept asbestos at all, however 5 miles away over the 'border' you can take in up to 200kg per month for free as long as it's 'bonded and wrapped/double bagged'.
(that weight is also supposed to refer to building waste and 'policed' by anpr cameras, but it doesn't seem to work very well!).

And no restrictions on how you get it there.

Interestingly though they won't accept plasterboard/gypsum waste whereas the nearest one will

Our local tip wouldn't take it, despite me actually going there beforehand to check whether they would, and how they wanted it.
Four separate times I took it there, only for them to shift the goalposts each time.
In the end, I got a licensed asbestos removal contractor to pick it up from my drive, where it had been sat in double waste sacks for months, after the final abortive visit to the tip.

Best of it was, it was tested and certificated non-asbestos (cement roof sheets from my garage), but the tip got twitchy "because it looked like asbestos, so it can't go in the rubble skip", but it wasn't asbestos, "so can't go in the asbestos skip".

That's the way to go. A friend of mine is having the same problem. She asked me to help her take it to our tip, who do accept asbestos at a price. Then she was told by some person who doesn't have a clue that it wasn't asbestos. I told her that it looked like asbestos and as far as I was concerned it was asbestos. I wasn't going to touch it so she got a firm in to do it. Prices ranged between £1200 and more.

As a householder, I can take asbestos to our local tip. Just turn up, with it double bagged, and fill in a form. You need a pass to show you live in Hull though.

Of the three tips in Hull, only one will take it though. There are licensed contractors of course, and we use them at work.

The crazy bit at the tip, is that the supervisor has to get togged up with full PPE (overalls/mask/gloves), and sprayer, and then I have to put the waste into the skip!

The idea that some sites make it it so difficult to dispose of asbestos is so fustrating, as it will encourage flytipping. Sounds like ours have it almost right ATM. Better shift our latest bag of the stuff ASAP before they change their rules.

I have disposed of an entire asbestos garage in the past, and found the odd bit elsewhere.

I've gone through a great deal of plastic sack/sheeting.

Hopefully, this will be the last batch.

This is crazy. Its not difficult to set up a skip for this these days. And its common enough to warrant a skip i every tip.

Rang the Council this morning, oddly there's no direct number for the tip! (sorry recycling centre..). They didn't seem to know much at all.

Took a roadtest up to recycling centre and spoke to the bloke in the booth. From what I can make out from the conversation as long as I can personally lift it into the skip it doesn't matter how many gutters are bagged up together?.

Council said I have to ring first to check for room in asbestos skip but bloke said not to brother..

Might just turn up with itban see what happens.

No wonder there's so much fly tipping going on, must have spent an hour or more today trying to get an answer.

The problem is because of 'outsourcing' there are very few council operatives above the call centre level...

In years gone by common sense prevailed, but now it is a profit and loss mentality.

In which case you may want to ask your council if they will remove it for free.

A friend in Essex got them to do that recently as it was below 40Kg

Again counties differ, but worth a try.
