Light 12v transformers replacement.

I have a really nice set of Twig Lights, bought a long time ago, proper metal ones, not the new brand of plastic ones, really dont want to throw them out....

When moving them around, I dropped the transformer, which now rattles, so I don’t want to use it.

Is there anyway to replace this transformer with something else? Can’t seem to find a new one, so was thinking of a 12v driver type of thing?

Chop the din style plug off the lamp end, and wire into the driver, wire a 13a plug into the other side and pray?

Would that work?

Transformer output is

12vac 2100ma 25.2va

Any suggestions?

Step one is decide if tungsten or LED, as this will effect type of power supply, some lights there is no real option, as there is nothing to catch hot quartz should a bulb blow, so it has to be LED.

Once you know which bulb type you can work out wattage required and type required, some LED's are DC only other are marked 50 Hz so clearly AC, you will want to be able to replace from local shop, so find out what you can get local, don't want to either store bulbs or wait a month for them to arrive.

There are loads of both transformers, and drivers but first find what you need, if changing to LED now is the time not after buying a replacement power supply.

Whilst it isn't always clear what something described as a "driver" actually is, one thing it is almost certainly not is a 12V AC (50Hz) supply

Yes - any 12V transformer rated at 2.1A or above.

It uses teeny tiny bulbs (technical term!) guessing no led replacements for them yet, so they are incandescent bulbs.

Or is it a “you’ll burn down your house, buy something else” time

Yup - any 12V transformer or "AC/AC" adapter or power supply rated at 2.1A or above.

Cheers, thank you. I’m assuming I can just cut the ends off both, and use a switch connector block to join them together as the din plug is on the end of the light cable, and the slots are on the transformer

Guessing the difference between 25.2va and 30va doesn’t matter?

Nope, it'll be fine, you can use a higher rated one, but not a lower rated one.

No, he does not want a DC power supply. The prievous one was AC.

One more question (ok its probably more like two....)

If I wanted to avoid soldering a new end onto the light cable, could I just join the two using an inline switch instead?

So I would have the new transformer into one side of the switch, and the light cable into the other?

Ok, now onto the really stupid question.....

How would I know which is live and neutral cables, Or wouldn’t it matter?
