Hey

Got an Xtramax GC 47 047 15, with small storage, for a 1 bath, 1 shower in ensuite, 10 rads flat.

Can someone give me a recommendation of how much I am looking at for cost to replace with sim, down in Brighton ? Or recommend someone ?

People sometimes recommend Intergas, but seems to me that once the parts are unavailable you are up the creek, therefore stay with mainstream makers, like Worcestor or Vaillant.

Seems to be still working, though hot water not as hot as normal, just been told by Scottish Power that they havne't got any parts so it lasts as long as it lasts, unless can find local engineer who wants to hunt around for parts ... but whether it's worth it don't know. Actually had a whole bunch of parts fitted 2 years ago by BG.

Unsure what to do, could just let it run as is until fails then replace. Get quotes to prepare. Seems like the best move ? It's 18 years old, but also seems pretty expensive so not in hurry to chuck.

Cheers for any help.

If its just you, in a flat, no at risk persons, risk it till it dies?

We have acquired a viessmann vitodens 100 in this house, seems nice and quiet, 7 years old and counting. Previous house has a main 30 he, unknown age but it did 7 years I was there without missing a beat, just a hoover out and flue gas prop every three years.

It came with the house, so somewhere between free and the cost of a 4bed semi, but the appear to be about £1000 depending what power you get.

Why would parts be unavailable? They've been around 20 years nearly.

I have a policy with Scottish Power (although it was Vaillant service that came out).
Said that they only fit parts they manufacture and some of the parts on the machine they don't manufacture, and they don't shop around, so they said it's parts are obsolete, but that a local person my do it.
Not sure if other insurance is better for this kind of things.

as @Dan Robinson correctly says, Scottish power do not manufacture anything, you have either read it wrong or you are being ripped off, find a supplier for the part that you need and confront them, post what part they reckon you need and someone will post a link for you

No - it's all a total crock.

The general process is - sell people 'insurance' which only covers parts if parts are available.
Then ensure that their spares system or list only contains parts for boilers under about 7-10 years old, so that anything older that requires any kind of repair will instantly be deemed obsolete / can't get parts / unsafe / you need a new boiler.

The result - they get people to pay for overpriced insurance for years, and then for a new boiler on top of that.

Alright, so ... not quite sure what to do now. The boiler is 18 years old, still working but not as good as what it outa, running the hotish water from time to time get an error code of low heat flow rate (overheating) and restarts.

Do I start paying a local engineer who can source parts, I believe it was a 3 way valve and one of the pumps today. Should I just not bother because doing anything my destabilise it.

Or do I wait till it packs up buy and just buy a new boiler ?

And with Scottish Power, do I cancel my policy ?
Or do I keep it because it's £20/month, and without it I have no cover for any kind of problem ?

I can call Scottish Power up (it was Vaillant who came to service it and said they had not got these particular parts - and they only install parts they "make") .... and say ... give me my money back, sure they'll laugh in my face.

Cancel your policy. I've just checked the biggest national spares stockist and nearly all the parts are listed as available.

Scottish gas like all these domestic insurance companies are not in it for your benefit.

As I said above..... Call The Fat Plumber. If the boiler is beyond repair then fair enough. Either way he will give you good service.

Bloody awful boiler, is that the one where you have to use their terrible wireless programmer which is obsolete?

thanks, what's the name of that parts supplier ?
It's not just one supplier - parts are widely available. Wolseley, City Plumbing, Plumbase, and a whole host of online suppliers can all get spares for your boiler. As has been said above, boiler insurance schemes are there to do nothing more than make easy money for the insurers. You're much better off keeping that money in your bank account and paying a friendly local engineer as and when you need them. It'll save you money overall.

As for replacement boilers, you really can't beat Intergas and there's absolutely no reason to think that spares will become unavailable any quicker than for the big brands

As Dan says, xxxxxx will look after you http://www.fatplumber.com or xxxxxx at Option Energy Solutions
