I suppose, if I really felt it necessary, to refer to different 'types' of people (skin colour and bodily characteristics) I'd use words like ethnicity, nationality or custom, depending on the context. But I might use words like tanned, light skinned, pale, dark, long, tall, short, fat, thin, gangly, etc.
I'd be quite happy for people to use the word 'race' as long as they were using the socially constructed concept of race, and in the correct context.
