I always used to ask for 50 % up front. Too many people say at the end of the job, I get paid next month,can I pay you then? I’ll pay you when I get the gas safe registered document through.

It’s a joke, and the materials cost a lot. I don’t know what your issue is op tbh ? If you trust the lad and have it in writing that you ve paid 50% your legally covered. Also , you still have 50% at the end to negotiate with if you are unhappy

Can you pay the deposit on a credit card? Then, if they do a runner with your money, you’re covered.

50% is pretty steep. It need only cover the restocking fee plus some extra if the job gets cancelled.

I can't imagine that many people would be particularly happy paying a plumber £1500 for a job that is not immediately commencing.

Those are his terms. Perhaps ask him why, or move on. I can't see an issue if you're confident in using him. Why do people get so hung up about money? I don't give credit to just anyone! Look at what you have to go through before getting a new phone FFS!

Got to say rhino, I wouldn’t be happy working for you. Kind of bloke who goes on a forum complaining. It’s every tradesmans nightmare.
Why don’t you go with a company like BG who will install on a payment plan. Your £40 a month will give you better value for your money if your drip paying over a few years ?

I dont do many installs these days and only for people I know, get upfront whatever I ask for, used to do mainly installs with leads through advertising and was totally fed up trying to get paid, with so many newbies in the industry having to earn some bucks there is not a great deal of profit if you are competing solely on price, better to offer a superior job and make a decent profit rather just throwing boilers at the wall, do a good job and they recommend you and come back every year for a service

I have no problem with paying a deposit, I was only querying the amount of deposit.
There are unscrupulous tradespeople out there and I have to be mindful of that.
I realise that there are plenty of decent installers out there , I just have to find one.
