Seen the cost of light bulbs now .....and those stupid low energy ones that don't last and you have to dispose of very carefully !

All because of the EU another reason to leave perhaps someone wants to list low energy light bulbs in his reasons it's good to be in the EU and make it to 99 !

Yes! Let's leave the EU so we can stop using energy efficient products and increase our electricity bills, that'll make us great again!

Maybe I'll buy some shares in EON this year ...

and you have to dispose of very carefully

In one breath ( document ) the EU ban some metals because they are toxic and in another document the EU require we change to lamps that are likely to contain the same toxic materials.

Are they really energy efficient and "carbon neutral" when you take acoount of the entire life cycle from raw materials to end of life ( failed lamp ) disposal.

There are claims that for the same level of perceived comfort LED lighting requires a room to be a degree or two warmer than the same room with incandescent lighting.

I think it was Philips Lighting way back in the 1970s who investigated the difference in comfort effect between "cold" flourescent lighting and incandescent lighting.

Leaving the EU, (which I strongly agree to), would not automatically mean we could ditch all the rules and regulations we now have in place. There will not suddenly be the old style lamps back on the shelves or any other 'old regulations' brought back into play. It would simply mean if the EU made a declaration that they would introduce a new law we, as a country outside the EU, would not have to follow it or we could adapt it to suit our needs if we thought it would be beneficial to the majority or to the planet.
Countries all over the world look at the rules and regulations of other countries to see if they are doing something which may be beneficial/harmful if they introduced similar laws.

Typical quitter stupidity...

They'd rather pay more for ideological reasons...

Next thing you know they'll be hankering after gas lighting and candles

I cannot find anything to suggest otherwise.
Look at the manufacturing processes.

Didn't the old bulbs also have metals that were toxic?
Tungsten or carbon for the filament, both vey low on the toxicity scale..

Maybe why they made the warm white LED bulb?
Look at the spectrum and then compare with the spectrum of incandescent lamps, especially at the red to infra red area.

If we came out of the EU and banned light bulbs, how would we be able to sell our lighting equiptment abroad, OK so the Brexiteers want to live by Candle light now , great progress for this Country !!!

That's not even a sentence, let alone an argument.

Introducing new regulations can help drive innovation.

Would the move to LED have happened without a push from low energy targets?

I understand the cradle to grave embodied energy argument and maybe there should be more transparency on the issues surrounding the rare earth materials tyat go into these products.

I hated those CLS bulbs and always stuck with incandescent.

However now its moved on to LED technology which now both quite cheap and the dimming and colour temperatures have been solved -whats not to like.

Ive just put in 12no downlighters in a room -8 watts so 96watts total. The old GU10 halogens would be using 600watts.

I heard a science programme the other day, where it claimed we were down to our last decade of some types of mineable metals.

And how bad for the environment might the recovery of said metals be, even when recycled?

The irony of Brexiteers who think all their problems are due to regulations, why dont you look at any third world country you despise yet want to emulate.

What sets the developed world apart are these standards and regulations.

I was in a group with some geologist prospectors, who travel the world on contract.

They explained that if you are, say, an oil or mining company, and you have ten years of proven reserves, and several probables, you don't bother looking for more.

When you get down to nine years worth, you hire somebody to go and look for some more. Once you've found some, and signed a lease or treaty, you stop looking.
