So I generate small volumes of trade waste, boiler parts, packaging and the usual junk that goes with the territory for being a boiler man. Have used HippoWaste bags for the last few years, a pallet with wheels sits on my drive with a bag on and every few weeks I drag it over to the van and empty my carp into the bag. Every couple of months the bag is full and Hippo come and collect for a hundred odd squids...

Two months ago, my bag got stolen? And today - Stolen again!!!

I live in North Herts - No vans permitted without a permit, no dumping of commercial or "suspected" commercial waste which means I cannot even dump my own dishwasher (As I found out the other day)...

There has to be a better way? What does everyone else do? I thought I'd cracked it with Hippo, expensive but an easy solution... Now my bags are being stolen for the odd pump housing and bit of brass this is getting ridiculous - Especially as I know if the waste gets tipped (Which I'm guessing it will be) and then gets traced to me - I'm liable for the cleanup and the fine! Do I now have to keep it locked up and in the house?

Make sure you keep this video, (encase anything comes back to you due to fly tipping) also fit new electric gates on the drive that are normally closed, fit another camera on the side of the house and have a sign saying 'smile you're on camera'

We are refurbishing the house at the moment, the gated drive is on the hitlist - Along with a million other things, just seems crazy that I have to pay to protect rubbish (Literally rubbish!).

How do trades that live in flats or with no outside space do this? I heard NHDC was going to trial small commercial loads at one of their sites but the rates were unfeasible for small loads, unless you had a van load at a time it wouldn't be practical.

Try finding another waste company. I get a ton bag from hughes waste for free and collected for £60. They will also pick up hippo bags cheaper than hippo waste.

Im amazed he knocked the door! was there metal scrap or just waste?

Odd bit, nothing major and all iron based, pump housings, pcb housings and general odds and sods. There would have been bits of cable and maybe the odd zone valve. Just annoyed that this has happened twice now.

I’ll have to look into this alternate collection companies. £60!!! Wow.

I just find it amazing that councils are now so keen to crack down on commercial waste which I completely get, but it’s ludicrous that unless you are a major waste producer, no-one wants to deal with you. So we’re kind of stuck in nowhere land, you get your permits and you try and do the right thing but nobody really explains what the right thing is, if depots charge a minimum load amount then but you’re not technically allowed to drive round with it, what are you supposed to do with it.

Have you looked up the costs of a wheelie bin? Maybe a local company would do less frequent collections?

And keep all scrap out of sight, if not locked up? You don't want to encourage these types!

Or leave as much waste as possible (packaging especially) with the customer, and mix the rest in with your household landfill/recycling?

Split the metal out for starters, when the pile gets too big run it to the scrappie (yes you need a transport permit but iirc they're not dear).
The rest of it- cardboard, paper can go (in the car) straight in the recycling bin at your local tip. Polystyrene-break it up, bag it, local tip.

One of our local scrap metal merchants will provide free skips which he empties free & buys the scrap off you. Even if you did not fill it quickly yourself there are always people looking to get rid of small amounts of scrap.

Wow, he is a legend!

Already have waste carriers license as it's kind of stupid these days not too; especially when it's free for the volume I generate.

As for the cardboard, paper and polystyrene - Its what I used to do until the Hitler at the tip kicked me off for dumping commercial waste. The problem is with the likes of PCBs.

I've opted for a new "skip bag shed" - But it seems bleeding crazy to me as to how most people get rid of their trade junk. I've worked for 8 companies and only 1 of them had a waste management programme... All the others just expect you to deal with it.

It's not free - if you have a lower tier free registration, you have the wrong one.

Carrying any amount of construction waste automatically requires an upper tier registration which has to be paid for, and renewed every 3 years.

Construction or demolition requires an upper tier - But repairing a boiler surely cannot be construed as construction? After all, that's why it takes a couple of months to fill a bag; we are not talking huge volumes of waste here.
