The export of live animals for slaughter

Still only a consultation.
And it's not a ban on live exports.
It's a move to get animals sent to the nearest abattoir at the 'end of their lives'.
Effectively stopping live exports for slaughter.

But you have to look at the figures to understand what this proposal is not.

The majority of live exports are for 'fattening up' not for slaughter.
Which at the moment isn't a part of the banning proposal, so not a full ban.

Don't get me wrong, I'd support a ban as some countries that we send live animals to have worse welfare conditions than we do.
But it's a bit ironic that whilst trumpeting the UK's animal welfare credentials, any deal we do with the US will probably have to include allowing in animal products which have been produced under even lower welfare standards!
