Spur socket off lighting

That's some link you've posted Sunray!
It is - but it does work. The problem is that if one tries to post it ('more conveniently') like ... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BS546-India-Sri-Lanka-Nepal-Travel-Adapter-Change-World-Plug-AC100-250V-10A-WT/261172835295?_trkparms=ispr=1&hash=item3ccf1d33df:g:4sEAAOSwgrBdrGGz&enc=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&checksum=261172835295fc9ecb1653ed40a986c16ac4282e713b&enc=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&checksum=261172835295fc9ecb1653ed40a986c16ac4282e713b] this ... then, as you will discover if you try it, the forum software hiccups because "the URL is too long".

One probably can on eBay :)

If he'd seen some of the things my grandparents had plugged into 5A sockets (which were what most of the few sockets they had were), he might decide to make his warnings/restrictions even more draconian!

Kind Regards, John
A classic example was the 2 or 3 way B22 adapters (some even had switches) plugged into the ceiling pendant into which was invariably plugged an iron.

Indeed, my grandparents (and even parents) had plenty of them - and I still have some specimens in my cellar - like these for example ...

... but perhaps more worrying (and 'on topic'), from much more recent times is (also from my cellar) ....

whether your generally extremely risk-averse position is the result of past traumatic experience(s).

I just find it better to be aware of what can go wrong so that if ( when ) it goes wrong there is a strategy in place to cope with the situation.

Well, yes, I'm sure that we all do that, consciously or subconsciously, to varying extents.

The point is that all people differ, particularly in respect to how great the probability of a particular "going wrong" has to be before they regard it as worthwhile to expend any time/effort (or even 'heartache') thinking/worrying about it, let alone putting into place a strategy to deal with it if it ever happens. Life is absolutely full of potential risks, but some are extremely improbable.

I'm not in any way criticising people for being anywhere on that spectrum of attitudes to risk, merely observing that the spectrum exists. Indeed, if I were contemplating 'criticism', it would be more likely to be at (what some people might regard as) the 'reckless' ('head in the sand') end of the spectrum, rather than at your ('ultra-cautious'/'very risk-averse') end!

Can we still purchase 5A to 13A adapters so the wallwart that comes with the fairy lights can be plugged in?
No need. He was talking about cutting and crimping or junction boxes so obviously no wall wart.

I have seen such things John. But we have moved on. My dad was often running downstairs to mend a fuse after overloading. It never happens now 13a sockets are on their own circuits.

I'd love to know which world you life in Winston.
AFIC the situation is worse now with RCD's covering power AND lights

RCDs don’t trip on overload.

MOD: Tiresome.

I took it that the op was talking about cutting and crimping etc regarding how to connect the socket wiring to the outside light.

(No need for cutting or crimping, you should just connect the cable into the existing connector block without cutting anything.)

I shouldn't think there's any modern set of Xmas lights without a wall wart now.

It may pay to use a large weatherproof junction box, as it can house both the wall wart AND any controllers for different flash sequences.

I dare say a pro would find a better solution that running off an outside wall light, but there you go.
