Hi, I have a small ground floor window (860 x 1150mm) to brick up before a new combi-boiler is hung there, and have a few queries;
- Would there be any issues taking out the lintel, as the boiler flue would ideally go where it currently is, or would it be better to just rethink the flue position? I believe it to be a concrete lintel as the extension was built in the 70/80's.
- I will key in the outside bricks, and tie in the inside blocks either side at every other course, but will the inside and outside also need to be tied?
- I intend to leave the soldier course as is.
Any other tips/suggestions?
Many thanks!

seriously? The core will take out a large proportion of it.

Do you mean the brickwork will self-support?

Core drill what’s likely to be a cast concrete reinforced lintel? And if he’s not a masochist?

You'd be surprised at the advancement of diamond technology in the past two centuries.
Some people overestimate what a plumber wielding a diamond core drill at height, is capable of. Perhaps Woods is confusing a slack armed plumber with industrial concrete cutting services.

I'd probably brick up under the lintel then bost a hole through the middle with a decent medium breaker. Some of that rebar can be quite chunky. You may even need a recip to nip through the rebar.

Thanks for the tips! Sounds much simpler to place the flue outlet away from the lintel.

Let me know the day, and I'll take all my plates off the wall and Capodimonte off the fire place. And you take care with rattling your fillings. :cautious:
