At no point did he say that 100,000 would be actually taken but they took 81,000 yesterday. I'll wait a while to see if they can maintain it.

Hunts just pointed out that A&E can't get back to the usual occupancy levels as people would catch it.

Will be able to check if the 81,000 is correct later today. No point posting though if no one reads them.

I know what was said, the target is from yesterday onwards, so lets wait and see, or did you expect 100,000 tests the day after the speech, and not building up to it.

Why are you shouting? I said "end of April," just like Hancock did. It actually says "every day by the end of this month," which has now slithered away into "on one day at the end of the month." Sorry for shouting, i think we have crossed wires here,i know what Hancock said about the 100,000 goal every day BY end of april,but we won't know till later this afternoon and following days surely.

The government has changed the way it is counting the number of covid-19 tests carried out in a bid to hit its target of 100,000 tests per day by the end of April, HSJ can reveal.

Previously, a test would be counted once the sample had been processed in laboratories. But this definition has been changed in the last few days, a senior source told HSJ.

The Department of Health and Social Care is now including tests that have been posted or delivered to people’s homes in its figures. This means tests which are sent to people are counted before the recipient has provided and returned their sample to a laboratory.

Who is counting the number of tests done?

Is it the govt?
or an agency paid by the govt.

Previously, a test would be counted once the sample had been processed in laboratories. But this definition has been changed in the last few days, a senior source told HSJ.

No they were only testing hospital entries and key people - mostly NHS workers. There are 10m key workers over all. 1/3 of the working economy.

Due to problems getting to people to test they have a home test that can be posted to people.

Then there are hospital tests, drive in tests and mobile tests,

They have added another group who can now get tested. Over 65's who have symptoms. Makes the total who can be now 25m.

All of these tests are processed in a lab and are viral tests.

Then there is talk of an immunity test. Ideally send millions out to peoplebut so far they are not accurate enough to be useful. They can say up to 1/2 of people are immune when they aren't. Then there is the Pillar 4 immunity test using Porton Down technology. about 6,000 people periodically tested. Part of the reason is to see if any immunity lasts.

All that may be true, but if the measure of a test being performed is a test kit being sent out, that's very different to the test kit being sent out, used, returned and processed.

In the early stages of the disease there were backlogs of tests that couldn't be processed because there weren't enough labs. It would have been misleading to say that those tests had been carried out at the time. But if that link is right then that's exactly what is being measured now.

Also you probably will have more tests sent out than are processed. It's a much easier metric to score well on.

For example I know someone who has been given a swab-at-home test. It's missing the return label and so the advice given was to ask for another one to be sent.

That's clearly not a completed test but if it's being counted when it's being sent then that's a load of *******s.

I wonder about the other catch. It can take longer to process the swabs than take them.
