Extending boarded area

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.

I live in a terraced house, and the joists run front to back. In the loft the previous owner (or maybe the developer dunno) has boarded the centre of the loft, but for some reason they've not boarded up to the wall, they left the first two joists with no boarding (so the joists on the right and left if you were to look at the house from the outside).

Unfortunately they've boarded right to the edge of the last joist, they've not left enough room to put down another board. So, rather than take up the boards that are there and cut them back slightly, would there be any issue to lay the new board so that it overlaps the old board slightly and add some batten beneath the new board to make up the height different where it touched the currently exposed joists.

Whilst I know it's not the best way of solving the problem it certainly seems the simplest (and yes I know I'm a terrible bodger ).

I did consider that, but I was a bit concerned if I messed it up then the plank relying on joist extension could give way and be a bit dangerous?

Screwed to joist it’s as strong as sitting it on joist.
