And DDR media made them believe that crime and social distress was much higher in the West, and on that point the DDR media was correct. There was not much crime. ( theft and attacks on the person ) in the DDR, Drug abuse was higher in DDR than the GDR

That was probably as much to do with "fear of change / the unknown", as much as anything.
People are generally happier in their comfort zone, even if it isn't that comfortable.

What do you call mainly fit, young men who pay people traffikers thousands of pounds to get them to Europe? When they get there, they travel through several safe European countries to France where they try to sneak into The UK on the axles of a lorry? Or on a lilo across The Channel? These young men who cherry-pick The UK from all the other safe European countries: do they sound like genuine refugees fleeing war and oppression, Johnnyboy? Why didn't they claim asylum in the first safe country?

If Trump goes ahead with his threat to cut all imports from China, where in the UK are we going to get all these workers to produce our Trainers, Laptops, and all the other paraphernalia of modern life.
The prospect of having to work for a dollar a day 7 days a week doesn't sound very enticing.

Can we totally dismiss the correlation between wealth sharing and socialism?
From our collective experience, the two do not correlate.

Socialist countries typically have a dirt poor population with an extremely wealthy and corrupt bunch of crooks at the top. All equal though.

All gin, no matter how cheap or expensive, tastes the same to me. Unlike with whisky, where I can (9 times out of ten) tell which is the expensive stuff.

Gin will always be Gordons for me, and Rum Lambs. Let John D and El Al pay through the nose for the fancy stuff to drink at their politburo meetings.
