times change old bean
My point precisely. So do we tear down all the statues each new era when ""times change""?Destroy statues of law abiding citizens because the law changed and someone is offended by history?

I do believe Genocide has been illegal a while.
Colston did commit genocide

Genocide:
the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular nation or ethnic group

throwing 20,000 people off a boat is genocide

if we said Colston committed genocide instead of slavery would you still argue his statue should be there?

that precisely is the point: you dont have one
-because your argument is dishonest, you are conflating something very specific and turning it into all statues.

We should also destroy all Roman statues, remains, historic buildings - obliterate them. Most prolific slave traders in history. I'm affronted that we put up monuments to Romans who may have enslaved my very ancient ancestors.

:ROFLMAO:
That is a good point, the difference could be that unlike the Roman slave trade, the fallout from centuries of the black slave trade is being played out on the streets of America and Europe.

Stick to Colston then...Law abiding citizen..in his time .People of Bristol majority want him there. The mob pull him down..How is that defendable.

Throwing slaves overboard wasn't considered a crime back then.
I read one account of one slave trader who ended up in court for throwing slaves overboard, however he wasn't charged with genocide, he was charged with insurance fraud.
He had insured his cargo of slaves with Lloyd's of London, when some of his slaves got sick he dumped them over board and then tried to claim off his insurance.

oh go on please explain what bias?

a statue of a salve trade has been taken down

please explain the bias
'Notch gets upset when people challenge his little world view' Notch cant reason like normal people Notch has no life outside diynot forums (y)

Yawn...

Go on your turn with the playground banter..

I know its awfully tedious Festive, but trying to argue I am 'getting upset' is a rather weak ad hominem and simply untrue.

Its what you do when youve run out of argument.

try debating honestly for once, you never you know you might advance your knowledge instead of staying within your safety zone of bias.

someone is offended by history?

When the legacy lives on and affects lives today, it is not history.

So to defend a point about racism Priti points out she has also been the victim of racism and Bigot Bodd thinks that's dealing with the issue.

It would appear that Sadiq Khan has a balanced view:
"Sadiq Khan said he had set up a commission to review the capital's landmarks to ensure they reflect its diversity."
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-52977088
Also the owner of the Edinburgh minument:
"Edinburgh's slavery links to be added to Melville Monument"
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-52978121
So instead of all this accusation of vandalism, absurd arguments about removing all statues, how about a bit of sensible discussion along the lines of Sadiq Khan and Edinburgh.

Along the lines of my earlier comments about re-appraising history in the light of our current comprehension of history and its repercussions, not to re-appraise history means that we will not learn from our mistakes.
More importantly, we are actively denying our children of a fair and balanced education.
And our children are our future leaders.
