Does anyone know the ins and outs of the MOT extension scheme ? The gov website says cars with MOT due between 30th March and 31st July will get a 6 month extension, mine is due on July 31st, and gov website still says it's due on July 31st, do they not show the extended expiry date ?

Mine, which fell between those dates shows a 6 month extension, so it would seem like it needs doing.

My MOT extension was applied about 6 days before my Tax ran out, then it allowed me to Tax my car.

I presume they cut it fine, in case you manage to get an MOT done.

Mine wasn't extended until ~3 days before the tax ran out. When I tried to tax it initially their pages came back can't find the MOT. There was also a note somewhere saying check later.

They also show an email address to use if it's not been extended. Not sure where it was but probably on the MOT check pages.

My tax is due on 1st August, may have to book it in, shame as I am thinking of changing it for a new car or van, possibly wont get much for a large diesel 4 x 4.

This is the email we testers got from the DVSA. As yours ends on July 31st, you will definitely get an automatic 6 month extension. A day later and you wouldn’t. It will get updated automatically. You’re the closest one to the cut-off I've heard of. Lucky you. (y)

I bought my late mums car when my dad died, a little run-around that's exempt from the London charges when visiting in-laws. Still in the garage locked up in Cornwall. Luckily MOT was due in June and gets the 6 months extension as I can't get down there.

Are garages doing much work does anyone know? I'd like to get a new clutch & sort out air con on my mini but just presume that garages are scaled back.

I'm running a Subaru Forester - a diesel that didn't cheat. I wondered about changing but have decided to wait. At some point plug in hybrids should be available with a decent range on electric. I'm thinking in terms of 40 urban miles but do need a range for trips to any were in the UK at speed as well. I regularly do a 200 mile trip :( pre lock down.

It's a strange area really. Switch to petrol and way more CO2 comes out and I am annoyed about them tarring all diesels with the same brush.

I feel it's a bit of a mugs game changing at the moment. I feel what I might buy now will be outdated too soon. I also wonder about car heating and air con especially if full electric.

What happens re the date the vehicle will need a new mot and will it run from the extension or the original date?

My local garage is inundated with work and has been since he re-opened after shutting for 4 weeks.
Mind you, we are a small village and he does the majority of the work for the residents plus some farmers machinery.

I agree, it's just I've had my car nearly 10 years, keep saying I'll change it, but can't find anything that compares to it, it's comfy, fairly good mpg, 7 seats, more than enough space for me, 2 mates and all our fishing gear, which is why I considered looking at a van (don't need all 7 seats, they came with the car).

STFF, we have just had work done on our cars by a local garage.

ajohn, my favourite kind of engine: boxer + diesel!

As for a new car, I think the Kia e-Niro has a very good range. if I were in the market for a new car now, I would have one of those. Very highly thought of and a great range well in excess of 200 miles.

As far as heating and cooling go, I guess using these systems will reduce range.

Be aware that an MOT extension is no excuse for driving a car which is considered unroadworthy/dangerous if involved in an accident.
