Hi,

A friend has asked whether I can run an ethernet lead between his house and a neighbours about 50 metres away so he can share their ultrafast broadband that he can't get in his road.

Of course, that's easy but I have only ever done to outbuildings on the same electricity supply before and there is a nagging thought that I have to be concerned with earthing here... It'll be using an armoured CAT6 cable between the two houses. It will link two routers together.

What is the consensus on how this should be handled please?

Thanks

Graham

It's illegal but then you probably don't care about that.

the maximum distance for CAT 5e/6 cable is 100 meters, without a booster

not sure what obstacles are in the way but i would imagine would have to be put in some form of trunking to prevent damage

Apart from illegal, you will be responsible for any illegal downloading/copyright issues - so be careful, what you are allowing in your name

@Pete and @eta,
This is noit 'Illegal'.
This might be 'breach of contract' with your service provider (although not seen or looked for those T&Cs in my contract).
And ramifications are not likely to be worse than termination of contact.
And why would they do that when they want customers.

@GBrown,
Your neighbours downloading illegal and/or copyrighted items is an issue.
Likely that copyrighted is worse as some courts (mainly in US) directly sue the primary Address and will be complex to prove not you.
Illegal might be easier for you as you point police to follow the cable (you will then all have your computers confiscated for scanning).

An outdoor cable will work well.
(Even a normal indoor cable will last a few years - I have an indoor Ethernet cable off the ground and attached to fence working for last 7 years).
If you have the budget and the route is a bit difficult suggest you put down two cables at the same time so you have a spare if one is snagged or gets water ingress.

There is also point to point wireless links. They work well, but have to consider attaching to wall, powering them, and so sometimes just easier to put in a cable when route is relatively easy.

As far as I know the cable pairs are transformer isolated in the switch/router. So not an electrical problem (there's the copyright liability and if your broadband provider finds out you'll be in the clart).
Good luck- advise your mate (and you might want to consider it yourself) to use a VPN tunnel so your provider will struggle to packet snoop.
Oh yeah, one other thing- your mate needs to use the Internet RJ45 socket on his router to connect to a standard port on your router. Otherwise DHCP may start causing issues

I'm sure you can get 2 dish like things if there is a direct line of sight. and put it over the air
Search for wireless point to point bridge or link.

Oh how I wish I had thought of mentioning that

oh, looks like I might have done:mad:
Give yourself a pat on the back then and sit back with a self satisfied smirk.

Sometimes posts cross or get missed. Your sarcasm doesn’t make you look big or clever.

That might be a potential issue for the OP's friend's neighbour, but seemingly not for the OP (or his friend) ...
