I’m looking to build a front porch but outside the double doors is the gas meter which is in the ground. If I was able to build a timber framed porch with access hatch in the floor to this is that acceptable or not? Or would the gas meter have to be moved?

I haven’t dealt with many gas meter issues, but it must be accessible, especially for the ecv (emergency control valve). You may also have better luck posting in the plumbing section.

Better to move it; not usually that expensive. You may be able to get a quote online from gas co.

I got a quote from my gas network online and got it moved a few metres for c£400.

£400? Well done. Round here I'd expect a figure upwards of four times that!

Sgn quoted me £970 to move mine 30cm, to the other side of the wall (from inside to outside)

British gas moved one for my customer by about 4 foot for free a couple of years ago.

BG as a supplier are only permitted to move a meter if its less than 1m, and generally on the same wall and on flexi pipe i.e. relatively easy to do.
Otherwise it needs to be the network operator - Cadent or NGN.

That's what the customer told us.
I guess he called BG and was then passed to the ones you said.
