NICEIC domestic installer

NICEIC has Domestic Installer and Approved Contractor status registered electricians. It states that Approved Contractor has to pass more stringent tests.

I need to get an EICR for my house, so can I use a domestic installer, who has not attained the approved contractor status with NICEIC?

I think I can, but I thought it is best to check.

Neither test is stringent although as you say Approved Contractor is slightly better.

Anyone at all may carry out EICRs. Few are truly competent to do so.

It's best to get someone who has City & Guilds 2391 Testing & Inspection, in the first instance I'd ask anyone you contact for a quote if they have that.

Only Approved Contractors are permitted to carry out periodic inspection and testing within their NICEIC enrolment. So any "Domestic Installer" doing it would be unable to provide you with any document utilising the NICEIC logo for this.

Not really - it's more about being assessed for a wider/different scope of work, rather than just domestic.

DI was created for people who wanted to be able to notify Part P notifiable work and not much else.
ACs are often able to notify as well, although not always.

EICRs do not require any notification, and it's not necessary for anyone to belong to the NICEIC or any other organisation to carry them out. However plenty of places will claim otherwise, just as some will insist that people are 'NICEIC registered' before considering them capable of doing electrical work. Insisting on such things is mostly illegal.

However if someone wanted an EICR on NICEIC paper, then they would have to use a NICEIC approved contractor. Or if they wanted it on ECA paper, an ECA member. Repeat for the various other organisations that attempt to represent the electrical industry.

That's certainly a useful thing to have, but someone having that doesn't necessarily make them capable of doing EICRs properly or at all.
