Relay Problem

Its still possible that there is a relay controlling the valve pictured, if the actual controls that operate the valve are non standard then what then engineer said would be correct.
A relay is this type of device, Many different types.

In February I had a new cylinder and emersion fitted. I think the seized mechanical switch was replaced then. I know that silver box thing is new (as of Feb last year).
.......
I recognised the part and I remember being sent to screwfix to buy the part. Just looking for the invoice now.
If you setup a username on screwfix, the invoice may be online, under orders, as you may be within the 1 year warranty , if you get someone out in next week or so.

You could spend a lot of money upgrading to much more up market controls, but if what you have suits your needs their is no need.

Your guy seemed to not have much of a clue at all about heating systems, he was probably just a trained monkey to do one job - that of servicing a boiler and issuing a bit of paper. He was not an heating engineer. You are wasting money paying the company a regular (monthly?) fee, thinking what ever goes wrong with your heating, they will fix. In fact they will only fix your boiler and often if they cannot be bothered, they will say it is obsolete, parts no longer available and try to sell you a new system.

Sorry people! I have mislead everyone. I thought the silver valve was the relay switch. I got it wrong not the engineer.

A different engineer has been back and said the problem is the white relay box on the wall - he said it isn't working properly. He also said it is non-standard and that it is about 20 years old. It is now looking unlikely this relay box and wiring is covered under my policy.

I have asked if the company (Baxi) can do the work and simply invoice me, but they can't. Baxi have been sent out by Domestic and General.

Can anyone advise who I should call out to fix this? Ie, upgrade the Relay box? Or is there an alternative option? Part of me feels like having the whole system ripped out and replaced with a modern system - just not sure if this is the answer when I have a perfectly good boiler.

Lots of assumptions going on, could be a voltage free boiler or a honeywell smart system, if the op posts a pic of the wiring centre it would help.

This is the relay. There is no other wiring to the boiler or to a room thermostat. There are TRV's on the radiators and it is a small one bedroom house.

That is not a relay, either. It is a (probably) 20amp double pole switch with indicator. Likely that is the isolator for your boiler system.

I know. Sorry, I am a real pain. I will upload another picture if I can.

I just want to know who I need to get to come out - this breakdown cover is a waste of time and money. You get sold an all singing and dancing 'platinum' policy only to discover all the little exclusions.

Would I have to get an electrician out or is there a particular type of gas engineer that does the control wiring too?

we need to know what you are calling a relay first

A good one, who’s competent in electrical work, yes. However, as Ian and everyone else has asked, we need to know what you’re calling a relay.

I don't have the picture. But it will be a relay because the engineer said it was. In fact, two engineers confirm the problem is with the relay - I made a mistake in identifying the wrong parts.

D+G confirmed the Relay is covered. However, Baxi still haven't sent over the report to D&G in order for them to sign-off on the work. I would rather just have an independent engineer go and sort it out.

I am so disappointed in the service I have been getting. When I took out cover, I actually thought it was direct with the Boiler manufacturer but realistically, they are just a company who sells insurance policies. I don't recommend their service.
