I have had my old Heating system changed to a combi. The new Boiler is in exactly the same place with all feeds coming in through top. Two months ago I paid an Engineer £70 to reduce the old Gas Cooker pipe and cap off (in kitchen, not the loft). This piece of 6 inch pipe would of eventually been covered/decorated over and sits above cupboards anyway. I am absolutely livid as I can see no reason for him to have removed the piece into the Kitchen. No, he did not run a new gas feed and the existing 22mm gas pipe was already up there. If he had to make any pipe size/fitting adjustments this could of been done without touching the piece going down into the kitchen. I cannot begin to say how angry I am. I would be grateful if someone could calm me down by offering a valid explanation other than he was doing me a favour! And I only saw it this morning.

Did you specifically ask him to leave the run of gas pipe as you planned to use it again?
It is a standard of gas work that when an old leg of gas pipe is to be cut and capped that you try to take it back as far as you can to the original branch off the main. It would have been courteous though to point that out to you.

When I had the gas pipe cut back it was because it was no longer required (permanently). It was about 6 inches, and cut as near as possible to the Ceiling as it was tight to the wall to cap off. Also at that time I had not planned to change the Boiler/Heating system. The two events are totally separate from each other.

8.6 Connection and disconnection of pipes and fittings
Where any installation pipe is no longer required, the pipe(s) shall be disconnected as close to the point of
supply as practicable. All pipe ends shall be sealed with an appropriate fitting, e.g. a plug or cap.
COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON 8.6
Where practicable, any redundant pipework should be removed.
And it's the same with the water regulations regarding dead legs of pipework.
It's done due to the problem of trapped air that has the potential to cause problems.

You don't say why you are livid. If it's only for aesthetics I would be puzzled by your concern. Surely it will look far nicer when you have filled in and touched up the paint where the pipe has been removed from rather than have an unused pipe passing through the coving. I would have been delighted if he had done that for me.

The decorating and coving are new and The piece of pipe would of be covered...This is just another case of a ******** workman doing something not requested, not neccessary and because he had a 'good' idea
You got rid of the pipe , you asked to get rid of the pipe , you never asked for it to be capped off for future use, and 2 months later you get up and you are Livid ?????
The 15mm gas pipe was nothing to do with the 22mm gas pipe to the Boiler and would not have impacted on the new installation because the existing/old Boiler was connected and working. One did not affect the other
