Whereas in Austria, they were dragged out of their houses and beaten to death in the street by a rampaging mob of xenophobes.
By the end of the war 100,000 Austrian Jews were killed either in the streets or in concentration camps, or forced to flee for their lives.
The French gave sanctuary to any that escaped Nazi Austria.
