Hi i am about to begin a diy project on my back garden and create a boundary wall in 4 inch concrete blocks.

The wall will be 23 metres long and 1.8metres in height(6ft). The plan was to to do the wall single skin and add 1 block pillars on the back side at intervals to strengthen the wall tying in with ties of some sort, the wall itself will eventually be rendered which should add to the strength!

My footings are 300mm wide and 200mm deep so my question is which blocks are most suitable to use?

will a 7.3N dense block be overkill/too heavy or are these what i should be using?

Any help would be great thanks

How have you worked out those foundations? What intervals are you planning for those pillars?

You don’t need 7nm blocks but the will accept the render better.

Render won’t add to the strength by anything noticeable.

Hi thanks for the reply... to be honest i havent put much thought into the founds do you think they are insufficient?

i was thinking of putting in 8 pillars every 3 metres?

You said the blocks dont have to be 7N necessarily but what about density/weight of blocks is a thermalite for example not appropriate? As obviously these would place far less strain on footings but i imagine wont cope with the elements?

I should note only one side of wall will be rendered and primarily for aesthetics unless neighbours choose to do so at a later date

It all depends on the ground conditions but my gut feel is they are very under-specs.

long and tall wall, basically a big sail.

you need to do some proper workings/calcs for the foundations and the piers.

Don’t use thermalites - you need concrete blocks. They will be cheaper too.

Your neighbour can’t render your wall.

The piers tie in every 3rd course with a block lying flat.
Expansion joint every 6m.
I would go broader with the foundation.

Thanks for this i will look into calcs to see where im at. I have attached a quick sketch to show proposed wall there is returns in it does this do anything to it to provide stability? Its not completely freestanding i dont think?

Corners help with stability, would still put expansion joints in and plenty of piers.

A single skin wall 1.8m in height will blow down quicker than you can say Cutty Sark.

You need 600mm wide foundations with 225mm wall and 450mm x 450mm pillars at 3m or so.
