Cooker switch and socket overheat

Hi all

My mum asked me to swap out her cooker switch & socket because the red plastic windows for the neons had fallen apart.

I noticed that neutral on the supply side had melted slightly. so much so that the head of the terminal screw snapped when I was trying to undo it.

I had to cut the cable to remove it. And then used wire wool to remove the oxidisation from the copper.





The circuit is on its own 20 amp (RCB protected) MCB. The supply feeds a combi/microwave oven and a single fan assisted oven (the hob is gas). She occasionally uses her toaster on the socket side but says she has never run all 3 appliances at the same time.


Is it anything to be concerned about? I would guess that the socket was 8 years old.

Ahh, that makes sense, thanks. I did notice that the supply live was very easy to undo. I guess the neutral just kept arcing.

Unfortunately that won't work - the overheated copper will have softened (annealed), and will need to be cut away to a section that's not damaged.
