However, in the middle there are 2 islands Little Diomede (U.S.) and Big Diomede (Russia) which are only 2.4miles apart.

And a weird fact, the international date line passes between them making 23 hours difference in time

A factor why the US didn't invade... the Russians knew 22 hours in advance of any attempts.

The island of Great Britain stood as a haven for the European governments and armed forces to harbour and until the Americans to join the war. It was crucial to the outcome of the war.
We could never have done it without our allies but they would never have done it if this island was taken.

The USA still looks at strategic locations around the world in which to position their forces, should they need to attack remote countries. Sensible tactical warfare prep.

That's the reason they sacrificed so many lives taking Midway, Guadalcanal etc. Luckily the UK was occupied with friendlies
