Water softener?

We live in a hard water area and about to change our boiler so want to fit a water softener to help limit limescale etc.

What systems do people recommend? I have seen and know people with the salt ones but also seen ones that just have a sacrificial metal that helps but don't know anyone with that type.

What systems do people recommend?

There are two choices:
1. Ion exchange water softener, which will require refilling with salt at regular intervals.
2. Phosphate dosing devices such as the Combimate, which add a small amount of chemicals to the water. Needs refilling with the chemicals once or twice a year.

There are plenty of places selling other things which claim to work using magical coils of wire, magnets and other nonsense.
They only work for people that believe they do, which is generally the people who have wasted money on them.

I doubt it it's worth fitting a water softener just for the sake of the heating system. Once it's filled it's a closed circuit, and addition of fresh water is (or should be) minimal.

Its not just for the heating system lol

Everything is effected by the lime scale......

We have to clean the shower heads every couple of weeks as they start to block and spray in all directions, shower screens go cloudy, build up on taps etc.
