Outside light on a plug ?

Hi All

I’m soon to be having a waterproof external socket installed in the back garden.

Is it possible to wire some kind of LED floodlight to a 3 pin plug that uses this socket ? Wouldn’t be on all the time, would just mainly be used in the summer as the evening gets dusk to sit outside for a little bit longer and the external socket will be able to be switched on and off inside the house.

it’s just that breaking into the lighting circuit would be kind of difficult in this location

Use a double pole switch, ( switching both Live and Neutral ) to fully isolate the outside socket in case the socket gets damp. Double pole isolation ensures the RCD can be reset without having to wait until the socket can be dried.

Being "water proof" is not the same as being "moisture proof"

Yes of course it's possible. Pick your floodlight carefully- some of the cheaper ones are very fiddly to change the power cable on and you don't really want a joint in that cable.
Make sure your splashproof socket has a lid that will close with a plug inserted, make sure there's a drip loop in the flex at the socket and at the lamp.
3A fuse in the plug (assuming usual LED setup of 0.75mm flex and between 5 and 20w) and you're done.
