Hi, [ House warmer 45 1986 ]
Last night my central heating went dead. I traced it to a blown fuse.

Swapped fuse = fuse blown.

Soldered 5amp fuse wire across the blown fuses, turned down the thermostat to switch the pump off, and the fuse didn't blow.

Turned thermostat till the pump came on and the heating came on. Tried OFF/ON a few times and all fine.

What do you think, please?

Cheers, Camerart.

A 3 Amp fuse is the norm. The usual culprit is a waterlogged pump...have a look in the terminal box. Stick a plug on the pump with a 3A fuse and see what happens.

Hi G,
I have a modern terminal box, but this works off a ring main spur with it's own fuse. It's been 5 amp for 35 years. I hope it's not the pump, as it's under a compressor under the floor boards. I had to change the pump capacitor a couple of years back.

The terminal box on the pump..water ingress will often pop the fuse. 3Amps been the norm for decades...

Hi G,
Ok, I'll take up the floor boards and check. The pump will be difficult to replace, as there are no ball valves, so the system would need to be drained, and it has been a pain in the past. Does it need to be replaced?
C.

While the floors are up to inspect / replace the pump and the system drained it may be worth considering relocating the pump to a more accessible location for the next time it has a problem.
Hi B,
I agree this is the proper way to do it, but I intend to sell up next year, and I'm sure the next inmates will have a complete new system, So if possible I'd like to nurse it till then.

Post some pics...this system sounds like a museum piece and we could do with a laugh :)

Hi I,
Clutter? You should see the other three walls:) Actually, there are a lot of different subjects in there, as it is a big tidy workshop squashed into a little room.

2nd opinion for looking at the pump (water logged)

I flushed and inhibited the whole water system.

I'll check the wiring, also.

Is that a gas or CO monitor? Looks tidy compared to my office. Mrs Vicario refuses to hoover it as she can't see the floor some days.

Hi V,
A gas monitor. I clean my PCBs with chemicals, (Degreaser, alcohol etc) and it goes off then) Actually, the boiler has a gas cut out, but the fire doesn't, and it's impossible to change it.

I tidied up for the photo;) Yes, we are too busy to keep clearing up all of the time. I presume you are doing jobs in parallel, like me.
