SP Energy Networks, which supplies north Wales and parts of Powys, Ceredigion, and across the English border in north Shropshire, said 9,000 customers remained without power.
We are seeing reports everywhere of power failures, and they want us to use electric cars, so can't even sit in the car to get warm!

Sh*t happens - no-one said the world had to be fair.

We had fuel supply problems a few weeks ago, so there were people who couldn't get warm in their cars

ahhh theres a solution ??
a mains isolator and a back feed to your gas central heating boiler 'lights and freezer via a separate extension from your car ??

I have seen the idea of using cars on charge as a power bank, however only system I have seen for sale in the UK is for narrow boats.

It seems common to give a shore supply of only 6 amp, so a special grid tie inverter has been produced to supplement shore supply and also recharge the battery bank, and can be also used without a shore supply, but it is rather special.

Some cars have a little diesel-fuelled auxiliary heater.

Might make more sense than running down the precious battery.

Would it not be better to have a generator in the car?

My car does around 60-70 miles per gallon, my e-bike does around 50 to 170 miles per kWh.

Internet hunt gets
In an electric car, the miles per kWh figure tells you how many miles the car will go on 1 kWh, or unit, of electricity. So if your EV has a battery size of 50 kWh and an efficiency rating of 3 miles per kWh, then on average it can travel 150 miles on a fully charged battery (50 kWh x 3 miles per kWh).

3 miles per kWh seems a bit off?

Sons boat had one, also very common on cranes. But why, would a generator not be better?

Because it heats the engine coolant system up, so the car interior and engine can be warm, before the car is started. Alternative, as it's a diesel, is 15 miles driven in the cold.

Not an electric car, but mine has such an heater - chucks out 5Kw.
Lots of Webasto diesel heaters on Ebay from scrapped BMs and Jags.

Pretty small unit

I wonder if I could use one as a standby to run the house heating (though 5kW is not much)

10kWh in a litre of diesel, minus efficiency losses.

Mine has a built in 12v water circulation pump, they make great greenhouse heaters, with a large radiator attached and only draw around 20amps to get combustion running, then 1/2 amp once well lit. 0.25 to 0.5 Litre per hour and entirely self contained, 0v, 12v and a run signal or they can be can-bus controlled.

BBC news said:
SP Energy Networks said about 1,000 properties had supplies restored on Monday morning, with 604 customers still off across north Wales and Aberystwyth in Ceredigion.

About 30,000 properties in Wales lost power after wind gusts of 81mph (130km/h) were recorded on Saturday.
It was only 81 MPH? I remember working on the Falklands where 100 MPH was normal. Often got 120 MPH. That was just a breeze.

I blame the tree planting, no trees except governors house on Falklands no problems, we must curb this tree planting and save the planet.
