However only a relatively small proportion of the population has actually caught covid
Maybe this is the other "problem". At least 2 people on this forum call me a liar when I have said I have had covid, which I find baffling. "Only" about 11.4 million Brits have tested positive for covid, which is only 17% of the population. Of course, many more than that have had it (neither my eldest son or I were tested positive when we had it, due to tests not existing at the time) and I know several others that have had it but were never tested for it (one had covid antibodies and didn't even know he had caught it).
It is very possible that half the population might have been exposed to it and have antibodies. But we just don't know. SPI-M-O are predicting that there could be up to 2 million new cases a day by New Year.
Luckily, we have a vaccine so a trip to the supermarket is no longer like playing Russian roulette.
