I've just ripped down the ceiling in my hallway. We would like to have spotlights fitted, the original boards were very old (wallpapered and nails to the joists!) so I've ripped them all down and tipped them.

The area is 5.6 m² so not massive but there are a few options so a novice would like info on the pluses and minuses.

  • 12.5mm square edged
  • 12.5mm tapered edge
  • 9.5mm square edge
  • 9.5mm tapered edge
This is for the ceiling in an entrance hallway that will have spotlights fitted and will then be skimmed.

Cheers

If you want to be able to tape and fill them (so you don't need to get it skimmed), then tapered. If you are going to get it skimmed, tapered is less important

9.5mm is lighter, and AFAIK perfectly fine for ceilings. 12.5mm tends to be more for walls.

12.5. Yes it's heavier (you'll want a friend if you're putting up full sheets) but it's a bit more tolerant of shoddy handling than 9mm. A timber T bar the height of the ceiling is handy :)

Also known as a 'dead mans hand'. Needs to be a couple of mm longer than the distance from floor to finished height to it will jam the board into place, not just balance it.

Ahh, that's the posh name. Mine are set to joist height so with a board on top there's enough angle to jam them.
