Involved in peace talks from an early stage, survived a 'poisoning' attempt by Putin, although it was never intended to be fatal, just a warning.
Maybe it's just a cynical ploy on his part for an early release from sanctions. It'll be an interesting story when all the facts emerge that's for sure.

The early reports on poisoning were questioned initially due to the source. The bloke is around so could have been interviewed? 2 Ukrainians as well.

A new type of news source is being mentioned now - open source. Not clear what it means other than it seems to be not verified.

The bloke himself. He has been a Russian MP equivalent. ;) Boris meets some of his MP's personally. His opportunity style richness could be down to a number of things especially when Putin and his predecessor were determined to get shut of communism. All reports say this period did improved Russian living standards. The bits he was associated with did increase output. He was a trader previously so would understand the industries to some extent. Suppose like most things - depends how it's all looked at. He has spent money charity style in Russia and but less in Israel. Selling Chelsea - reports say he doesn't want the proceeds they can go to charity.

Russia as with Ukraine is said to be corrupt. How corrupt - I don't know but business in that sort of atmosphere is likely to involve bribes as it did not long ago on a UK arms sale. There are lots of countries about with that problem. Ukraine has it's oly's too.

Must admit given what I have read I'm inclined to think he is a better example of the breed. He is well down the world rich list now and it wouldn't surprise me if some who have done better are in the west. Nothing to do with current sanctions.

Autocratic despots? Well Israel met with 1/2 dozen of those recently along with Blinken. I've no idea how many options appear on Russian voting slips.

Do you think money doesn't influence politics everywhere? Afraid I do. Popularist aspects do too. I have heard that Russians like Putin because the west doesn't like them so they need a strong leader. That straight from a bloke in Russia when I visited.

Please keep an open mind regarding so-called poisonings.

A fact, no one knows for cert if they were poisoned and if so who did it as
there are many s stirring out there.

Re the ex CFC owner, I have no time for him whatsoever

Was he ever a bad guy?

Inndeed he was as he is one of the many that profiteered from the nationalisation of certain sectors of state-owned industry
were as good as gifted to those with money and well connected a bit like the PPE thing but much larger scale. Putin got his money like that I think plus payments from chums but it is all well hidden. Something over gov has been turning a blind eye to for mny years.

Depends. He was a trader, like futures, commodities etc it doesn't create jobs for many people. He moved into a field that does, lots of them.

His wealth - the bulk of it is likely to be the assets he holds not rubles, pound notes or dollars etc. Very rich people can create jobs. Problem in many places is that there are easier ways of creating more.

The problem is that he is being accused of rightly so, benefitting for the cronyism re the privatisation of previously state-owned assests. The very assets/money that should have been spent on Russians and not line the cronies' pockets.

Look at it like this - a hardman talks big about hitting people, making money via protection rackets, drugs, prostitution etc etc decided to go legit
and makes more money from the legit business and employing xx number of workers. The bottom line remains he has money that he can not justify and deemed as money gained via criminal practices. I vould be wrong but that is what the gov thinks.

Then you have the PPE contracts - were they fair, according to many they were not and we've all read/heard about stories where good businesses that had the knwoldge etc to provide some ppe never got a look in but those close to certain people did, allegedly.

The mans wealth needs to be sold off and money returned to Englands taxpayers like me and others that have funded hundreds of millions of pounds of weapons for the Ukraine.

I'm just a Plumber.... bug I'd say he's a good guy.... and hopefully he will be proved to be...

Something I can't quite get my head around, is how come all these Rushian gangster mobster thieves get to launder & park their ill gotten £billions through the City of London financial district????

Can Diynot please explain it in simple terms, 'cos as you all well know I am incredibly stupid . . . .

Turn a blind eye and line people's pockets, allegedly.

Why the gov did not act before is the question people ask but are already aware of the answer.

Btw, where is his boat???

That does not make him a bad person. Shrewd maybe, an opportunist, but a quick read of things it seems he did take some personal risk, but I'm not sure he did bad things to get where he is, like others have done.

There was something of a frenzy when he wasn't initially sanctioned, and certainly the fact he knew Putin personally was enough for some to label him as a bad guy.
A lot of that seems to have been purely out of jealously.
