Boris Johnson visits Kyiv

The alternative "Kyiv" has only come along in the last few weeks

Well it was mandated by Ukraine in 1995

But like you, I didn’t know - when the news started talking about Kyiv, I thought it was somewhere else they were going on about

Russia, the country to the East Of Ukraine, spell it "Kiev". The Ukraine spelling is "Kyiv".

Now can you see?

I understand perfectly what you are both saying; but you both seem to be missing my point, which is that the city's name in English is Kiev. In Britain we have always said Kiev, regardless of what Ukraine's, or any other country's pronunciation for it is, but the English speaking media have adopted "Kyiv" in the last few weeks, and many people are going along with it, including yourselves.

I bet you don't say "Munchen" when you are talking about Munich; you would sound ridiculous if you did.

Do you say Mumbai or Bombay?

It isn't only spelling with Kyiv, it's a new identity.

I say Bombay, just as I say Peking, Burma, Kiev, Londonderry etc.

The replacement of these English words for their foreign equivalents is part of the anti-British project well under way in the British media and institutions. It is as Orwell predicted in "Politics and the English Language" when he said that if words and speech are subtly altered or removed by the powers-that-be, thinking will also be changed because you can no longer think in those naughty words any more...

In using these words you think you are being good and kind, but you are being brainwashed into effacing your own culture.

But they have all had older names, how did you decide they are the "correct" ones. Have you been brainwashed as well?

Conclusive proof. (If you ignore the product name packaging!)

Unfortunate choice of description though.

Do you call Harare,Salisbury, St Petersburg, Leningrad

Kiev is the Russian spelling, but the country has been an independent sovereign nation for about 30 years and the Ukraine spelling is Kyiv.

Unless you consider Ukraine to be part of Russia……

Well thanks for explaining that - on the news some were mentioning Kyiv and some Kiev, though it always appeared on the map as Kyiv. I had assumed they were talking about two different places.

I think you maybe confusing 2 different things.

Kyiv is derived from the Ukrainian language name,
whereas Kiev comes from the Russian language

So the name changed and therefore the English transliteration has changed also.

Andy I have this image of you setting off in your Ford Popular, cloth cap on head going down to the garage to fill up with 4 star.

It’s Groundhog Day in Andy world :)

The Ukraine/Russian war is terrible, it's a horrible thing, it's a tragic waste of life. But, I can't help feeling that there are things going on in the background far worse, we are pawns in a very big game.

I don't think there is much doubt about that and all sides with ours at least thinking about it. The weaponry supplied has it's limitations and when asked one of our lot said it will increase Russia costs. Nothing about winning. That's why the question was asked. There is also no way what Russia put into action could capture Kyev without making a thorough mess of it first. More so the entire country.

End result - if Russia wants to join the rest of the world their leadership aspects will have to change. They are trying to get trade deals with other countries. One followed mentioned their own currency rather than USD. Some countries probably can't afford the sanctions.

China in terms of what they are actually saying boils down to lines on maps against death and destruction adding that a country's strategic aspects should be considered as well, both sides effectively in this case. Remove the need. They will probably be thinking about geopolitical aspects as well but they want trade world wide not some part of it.

Latest UK offering it seems is antiship missiles. If people are bothered by a fly they swat it. I wonder if Russia will ever think that way and what they would use.

There is also rather a lot of NATO stuff in the area now. Will they / won't they.
