EU united against payment for gas in Roubles? Nah!

Slippery sods have found a way round it apparently.

Yep, 'Slippery sods have found a way round it apparently' is indeed correct...

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...n-uk-sanctions-list-were-granted-golden-visas

"Eight Russian oligarchs on the UK sanctions list over their links to Vladimir Putin were granted “golden visas” to live in Britain.

The eight individuals, who Boris Johnson described as having “the blood of the Ukrainian people on their hands”, were granted the right to live in the UK after promising to invest at least £2m under the controversial tier 1 investor visa scheme."

Who rattled your cage? Got that Ukranian family round yours yet? I hear it's a lot easier now. Crack on. (y)

Absolute ball ache if the gas is turned off it not just as simple task of turning it back on again will take weeks and weeks to get people back on

Were you aware the UK bought over 200 million dollars worth of Russian oil since the conflict in Ukraine began? (According to Greenpeace) Eight shipments have arrived in the past two weeks at ports around the country. A government spokesman says 'we are phasing out Russian oil by the end of the year' and pessimistic opinions say the conflict could go on for years. So when oil is finally 'phased out', how much will the UK have contributed to the Russian war effort - while arming Ukraine.

War - what is it good for?

Business.

No. What difference does that make?
It still profits Russian oil companies regardless of currency.

Seems we will be until the end of the year. Oil gas or both - pass.

Also it's slippery Putin that set the payment system up.

Sanctions work both ways that must have been obvious from the outset

Dollars though, not roubles I take it?

If you were not stuck in Brexit land you would know that it seems any currency can be used and it's converted to rubles by a bank. The sanctions have been set up like this because all recognise that a country can/t just shut supplies off without finding an alternative source. Particular problem with gas via a pipe as the only alternative is liquid.

If you were not half asleep you might have noticed price increases of oil and gas - there is a shortage anyway.

Not much and TBH I really do wonder what Russia expects to gain from it. Actually that makes me wonder about the run up.

Poland have refused to pay and have topped up their reserves. The Polish president is a bit gung ho get involved and states emphatically that Russia will invade him next. I wonder what he will do if the sanctions are still on when his reserves run out and there is still a supply shortage.

As Russia will attack according to him there is no point in being in NATO. I hope things do not head in that direction. It would get complicated.

And if you weren't half asleep or stuck in the Eurozone you may have noticed the thread title and stuck to the topic about that fine club of European friends and partners not sticking together and some of them paying up as Putin tells them.

The simple fact is that we're just not in a position to cut off Russian Gas/Oil supply without absolutely crippling our economies and societies, particular for nations like Germany whose whole manufacturing industry relies so heavily on it.

It's one of those things where we have put ourselves in a position and we're going to have to hold our nose, get on with and put in place medium to long term strategies to ween ourselves off the supply. It's not going to be easy or cheap.

Odd thing is talk about gas but not much about oil. Russia exports that too.

2 countries can't export easily. Iran and Venezuela. Trump put an embargo on Venezuela. Some debate about the president that was elected. He reckons the one that did didn't and another did. ????????????? pass. It seems the embargo is hitting people there hard. Thought to have the biggest oil reserves. I suspect a lefty may have been elected but pass again.
