It's modern use seems to be an insult the looney left shout at anyone who does not share their worldly views. Very similar to how they use Bigot and Racist.

Not that Putin is Looney Left, but he is a very long way to the left, and notice how he even used it as an excuse to attack.

think of it as a clock face, full on Conservatism is about quarter past, full on Labour quarter to. Corbyn was about twenty to and Trump twenty past. But beyond that pure looney left and the far far right at 29 minutes to and 29 minutes past are just not that far apart - could you get a cigarette paper between Hitler and Stalin?

I guess so. Maybe better to call it what it is - fascism is fascism, not far right, not far left, but fascism.

Maybe it is more like a circle than a straight line - if you got further left or further right, you end up in the same horrible place.

In the 1970's when the National Front (NF) were the main knuckle draggers, lefties used to say NF stood for Nazi Fascist. Our history teacher who was very much into the politics of WWII said that Nazi Fascist was an oxymoron.

All the more confusing. We now have the Russian far right claiming to fight the Ukrainian fascist that are supported by the left and right of the west.

Not especially, no.

They do know however that in order to sow discord in The West, their best chance is to encourage and support right wing populism i.e. Trump, Brexit etc, as it causes instability and appeals to morons and causes hatred amongst native citizens.
